after administering Event Log permissions by Security Policy Windows Server > Security Question event id 18212 source distributedcom 0 Sign in to vote Hello, I've receiving at least 20 events matching: Event Type: Error Event Source: DCOM Event Category: None Event ID: 10020 Date: 9/19/2011 Time: 12:38:46 PM User: N/A Computer: SERVER Description: The machine wide Limits Access security descriptor is invalid. It contains Access Control Entries with permissions that are invalid. The requested action was therefore not performed. This security permission can be corrected using the Component Services administrative tool. After following: KB323076 to use the Local Security Policy to apply event log permissions. I have compared the ACL entries (found viadcomcnfg.msc) with a member server in a similar config where the error isn't being logged, and I see no difference. I can correlate the first error to the exact time where I implemented the security policy change; but can not determine how they are related. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks, Matt My unanswered threads: • DFS / RDC size estimations? • Online backup of Active Directory / ESE DB, command line interface to ESENT.DLL's JetBackup() function. The errors were logged every time the group policy was applied (I used gpupdate /force to test). It appears that the ACE for BUILTIN\distributed com users (S-1-5-32-562) was missing from the "Access permission limits" on the My Computer object in component services. If I added this ACE and updated the group policy, the ACE disappeared. However, the problem was resolved when I added the ACE then rebooted the machine (really restarting DCOM related services). It is possible that it was unrelated to the "security policy" change, but was actually below my radar for a while. Hope the above info helps others. My
may appear in your Eventlog. The error mostly occurs without notice. This security permission can be corrected using the Component Services administrative tool. To solve this problem, you should remove and add the Access Control Entries of DCOM. You can do so by https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/65a8a1de-f523-417a-847e-b924f8d16f58/2003-r2-seeing-a-bunch-of-dcom-error-events-10020-after-administering-event-log-permissions-by?forum=winserversecurity following these steps: Click Start, click Run, type dcomcnfg and press ENTER Expand Component Services Expand Computers Right click My Computer and click Properties Click the COM Security tab Be sure to write down the current permissions before removing ACL's. Then remove and add all present ACL's. dcom Windows 2003 Windows 2008 Windows Vista Windows XP 6 thoughts on “Event http://www.itexperience.net/2008/12/30/event-id-10020-the-machine-wide-default-launch-and-activation-security-descriptor-is-invalid/ ID 10020: The machine wide Default Launch and Activation security descriptor is invalid” Jodie Bass says: June 16, 2014 at 8:30 pm Dude, you rock. This can be overcome by performing a repair installation on the other computers and installation of their motherboard and other hardware drivers. 0 #3 VINCIE007 Posted 03 February 2008 - 07:30 AM VINCIE007 Member Topic Starter Member 79 posts Hello, Exact same MB and hardware in each pc, I use a different key that is on the side of each case during the XP mini-setup and the pc activates successfully each time. The only error after the cloned\ghosted install is a DCOM 10010 error. The fix for this is pretty simple; ** !Warning! messing around in the Component Services MMC can cause system instability ** 1. Open the Component Services MMC either by typing in the Run box "dcomcnfg" and pressing enter, or clicking Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services. 2. Expand Component Services + Computers & Right click on My Computer and click Properties. 3. On the Com Security Tab under "Launch and Activation Permissions" click Edit Default... 4.
