Now As some of you know, I inherited a network with DNS problems. I have been trying to clean it up manually, but as I clean, I this computer has at least one dynamically assigned ipv6 address.for reliable dhcpv6 server have noticed that the DHCP dynamic updates have been failing for a very event id 1056 dhcp server 2012 r2 long time. The IP range that is serviced by DHCP is in the very worst shape, *none* of the reverse DNS

entries are correct, and there are multiple duplicates. I just noticed that when the DHCP server boots up, there is a warning message: Event Type: Warning Event Source: DhcpServer Event Category: None Event https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/282001 ID: 1056 Description: The DHCP service has detected that it is running on a DC and has no credentials configured for use with Dynamic DNS registrations initiated by the DHCP service. This is not a recommended security configuration. Credentials for Dynamic DNS registrations may be configured using the command line "netsh dhcp server set dnscredentials" or via the DHCP Administrative tool. This message gets buried pretty quick, https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/14088-dhcp-credentials and I didn't really pay much attention to it because it wasn't a red splat, only a yellow warning. But I think it may be the root of some of my probs. I am pretty sure this server was restored from a backup shortly before I came to work here. And from reading DHCP Help and MSKB articles, the credentials are not restored from a backup. No one knows what the credentials were. So what should I set them to? The machine account? System? The Domain Admin account? I have no idea. What is the default? I tried looking at the Properties, Advanced, Owner of a few individual DNS records, but they vary. Most are System, but there are some machine names that I don't recognize - don't know if they are even on the network anymore. Severity: Error DHCP: Credentials for DNS update should be configured if secure dynamic DNS update is enabled and the domain controller is on the same host as the DHCP server. What does this mean? If you event id have the DHCP service installed on your domain controller without a service account configured, by default, DNS registrations from DHCP clients will be prevented from being registered and will log event 1056 in event viewer. Solution: Complete the following steps below to change the credentials of the service account used for DHCP. Before beginning, make sure you have a service account you can use event id 1056 to set the DHCP Server to run as. This account should be a domain account (not a local account) and should not have any fancy privileges (standard user account, not an administrator). Open up Server Manager Click Tools and select DHCP Expand your DHCP server and right click on the IPv4 service and select Properties Select the Advanced tab and then click the Credentials… button Enter in the User name, domain, password, and confirmation password to the user and click OK Click OK on the IPv4 Properties screen Repeat this step on each of the DHCP servers in your domain. It is recommended to use the same service account on each of the machines. On Monday of this week I moved DHCP and DNS from an older backup server that died. DHCP worked great on the new server until Wednesday. A power outage occurred Wednesday afternoon and most of the network clients did not come back online. After diagnosing the issue I noticed DHCP failed to start properly on the new server. I started the service manually and noted that the service was not set to automatic start. After reviewing the event logs I found a problem with DHCP. The event read, "The DHCP service has detected that it is running on a domain controller and has no credentials configured for use with Dynamic DNS registrations initiated by the DHCP service." I had a bit of a DUH! moment here since I've dealt with the issue before on other networks. The fix is to add DNS credentialsfor DHCP. The repair can be performed at the command line or using the DHCP manager in the OS. Using the DHCP manager Start -- Administrative Tools -- DHCP Right-click the IPv4 or IPv6 subheading Select Properties Select the Advanced tab Select credentials Put any user with domain user privileges Click OK Start -- type services.msc in the search box -- hit enter Scroll down to DHCP Right-click -- select restart Should be good to go Using the command-line (pretty much word-by-word from Microsoft KB282001 type netsh, and then press ENTER. Type dhcp server ipaddress ENTER. set dnscredentials username domain password type quit, hit enter You can also restart the DHCP server from the command-line with the following commands. net stop dhcpserver net start dhcpserver Posted by Jonathon Deringer at 11:14 AM Reactions: Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest No comments: Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom) Follow Me Follow by Email Other Blogs Church Production Training Blog - In progress Personal Geek"ish" Blog Categories Consoles Email Laptops Phones Printers Servers Software Stuff Going On About Me Jonathon Deringer View my complete profile Search This Blog Loading...
