to vote Hello there I am receiving the following error messages in conjunction with event id 102 each other: Event ID 201 Source: License Service No license was available for user {Username} usingproduct FilePrint . Use Licensing from the event id 200 Administrative Tools folder to ensure that you have sufficient licenses. and Event ID: 222 Source: License Service License usage for product Windows Server is at the maximum number of per server licenses purchased. New license requests may not be granted. Consult Licensing from the Administrative Tools folder for more information. When event 201 occurs, the user cannot connect to the network, resulting in a phone call from the client. This has begun happening recently to a client’s SBS 2003. I have tried reinstalling the licenses, including activated the backup licstr.cpa within the System32 folder. But this continues recur, Restarting the license logging service offers only temporary reprieve. This recently happened to another clients SBS 2003 machine, which leads me to suspect an update as the culprit. Can anyone help? Appreciate your input in advance Regards MIS MIS5000 Thursday, March 01, 2012 1:22 AM Reply | Quote All replies 0 Sign in to vote No update is the trigger. Antivirus may be scanning that file and mangling it. Make sure you exclude it from a/v scans. Running out of room on the c drive will do it as well. I have just now temporarily disabled AV to see how we go in case it is ignoring the command. Any other thoughts? Can i ask whatyou mean by No Updateis the trigger? September 18th, 2010 5:58am The error is mentioned in this sentence: -------------------------------------------------- Verify that you do not have more users trying to log on than the number of licenses that are
able to fix the server by clearing space and rebooting it but a typical side-effect of this is to have your CALs reset to the default number of 5. Microsoft has a support article for this issue http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888818 which really isnt very helpful because they advise you to restore the C:\Windows folder. What they dont tell you is the good news - Windows automatically makes a backup of the license file and all you need to do is replace the license file with the backup. Here's how: The license file is called licstr.cpa and is in the Windows\System32 folder. The backup of the license file is called autolicstr.cpa and is also in Windows\System32 folder. All you need to do is: Stop the license logging service. Rename the licstr.cpa file to say licstr-old.cpa Copy the autolicstr.cpa file to licstr.cpa Start the license logging service. You should now be able to see all your previously activated CALs in the License Manager. To make things easier, here's a few lines of code that will fix this issue for you in a jiffy:
net stop LicenseService
ren %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\licstr.cpa %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\licstr-old.cpa
copy %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\autolicstr.cpa %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\licstr.cpa
net start LicenseService
