Can anyone help with how to solve the following hard disc error please? On booting up the system log shows disc error 51 - An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation M$ says is means the drive is about to fail. I've got a full back up in case... The error only appears on boot up but can end in a complete lock up and failure to boot. It does not happen every time (say 1 in 10) and is more likely from a cold start. The error is logged for about two seconds (ie multiple entries), no other system errors are reported. I've replaced the hard drive and am getting the same error. Changing the SATA lead to a new port makes no difference. I'm using XP Home 1GB RAM, SATA 300 GB drive The drive is partitioned to C (installed OS) D (User data) I've reformatted the drive - it shows no errors and reinstalled the OS. I've also tried changing the page file settings - no change. Any suggestions greatfully received. Giles Edited by westwoodside, 0

Answer ID 3863 | Published 06/24/2002 11:36 AM | Updated 03/10/2011 09:05 PM The Windows System Event Log shows the following error messages: Event ID: 51 Source: disk Description: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 during a paging operation. How can this warning be resolved? This information applies to the following Operating System(s): - Microsoft Windows 2000 - Microsoft Windows XP - Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - Microsoft Windows Vista - Microsoft Windows Server 2008 An Event ID 51 is a generic error for any type of error that is encountered when paging information to Input/Output (I/O). A paging operation is when the operating system either swaps a page of memory from memory to disk, or retrieves a page of memory from disk to memory. It is part of the memory management of Microsoft Windows. However, every disk access is not necessarily paging I/O. It is possible for applications to perform non-buffered I/O to access disk data. Another misconception is that it is not writing to the page file (Pagefile.sys), which the name implies, but to any type of data access. See Microsoft Knowledgebase Article Q244780 for more information. An Event ID 51 is similar to an Event ID 9 or 11. An Event ID 51 only occurs during a paging I/O. If this same error were to occur when there was not a paging operation, an event would not have been logged, which is unlike an Event ID 9 or 11. An Event ID 51 can be troublehooted in the same manner as an Event ID 9 or 11. For additional information see Answer ID 15055. Was this answer helpful? Yes No Your rating has been submitted,
