It is recommended to keep it enabled. Just delete DNS servers added in IPv6 settings. Here you have to make sure that a writable DC is accessible. Please make sure that for each RWDC: Each RWDC / DNS server points to its private IP address as primary DNS server and internal DNS servers as secondary ones Each RWDC without DNS points to internal DNS server as DNS servers Each public DNS server is set as a forwarder and not as a secondary DNS server Once done, run ipconfig /registerdns and restart netlogon on each DC you have. For the RODC, make it point to internal DNS servers as DNS servers. Also, check connectivity. Also, make sure that needed ports for AD replication are opened:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727063.aspx Use PortQry v2 for checking. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "". The event id 4015 event data contains the error. I haven't found any good info on this error and it doesn't tell us anything whatsoever; here is Microsoft's very descriptive resolution: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc735674(v=ws.10).aspx There is a lot of speculation out there like "You should always point to another DNS server first not self, don't disable IPV6, and possibly slow links in VPN/MPLS connected sites". I'd like to try and demystify what is going on here, or at least get some verbose logging somewhere to find out what the error is referring to. I haven't seen this issue affect us negatively until yesterday when a whole site couldn't resolve a URL/hostame served by a conditional forwarder. Saw WAY too many 4015 errors so just restarted the service and it went away and the hostname resolved. We have eight sites and many DCs, I have disabled IPV6 (fully via registry) on all DCs and each Domain Controller points to itself then 2 others. I have always learned that this is supported and the Microsoft recommended way to do it. With all the speculation out there I'd like to see some specific documentation backing up why I should re-enable IPV6 and/or point to another DNS server first. Additionally it

There are no other DC's or DNS servers on the network. I am having a problem with machines taking 15mins to logon and I have traced this back to a DNS problem on the server. This server has only been installed a week. In the TCP IP Configuration of the NIC i have set the Primary DNS to 192.168.0.100 the servers own IP. In event viewer I'm seeing Event 4015 The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "". The event data contains the error. Event 4013 The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial synchronization has successfully completed.
