This blog post will cover how to install and the Exchange Rollup Update successfully without getting the “Ended prematurely” error. The Setup Wizard https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc735573(v=ws.10).aspx for Update Rollup fails with the error “ended prematurely”. It has been the same issue for Update Rollups for both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010. The installer fails with the information: Setup Wizard for Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (KB2917508) ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, please https://www.msdigest.net/2014/03/setup-wizard-for-exchange-update-rollup-ended-prematurely/ run the installation again. The screen dump below also shows what error look like: The reason for the error and why the Update Rollup installer is “ended prematurely” is because the server has User Access Control (UAC) activated on the server. For good reason, it is not recommended to disable the UAC. The error is also shown in the event log, as Event ID: 1024 and with error code 1603. How to Install the Update Rollup The recommended process for installing Update Rollups on the server, is using an elevated command prompt (Open a CMD with Run As Administrator) and make sure the Update Rollup is located on a local drive of the server and start the installer using: SYNTAX example: msiexec /update
update unable to install updates Discussion in 'Software' started by CorballisT, Sep 19, 2006. CorballisT Private E-2 Hi - am hoping someone will be able to assist as I'm at my wits end! For quite some time now my windows update http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/windows-update-unable-to-install-updates.102744/ returns an error when it tries to install updates. I have tried everything I can think http://blog.powershell.no/2010/04/20/installing-exchange-server-20072010-update-rollups/ of, including: * Ensuring there are zero registry errors by using RegistryFix, version 5.5 * Running the usual spyware progs - spybot, ccleaner, etc. All clean, big thumbs up. * Ensuring relevant registry entries have access defined to the SYSTEM user. Microsoft told me that, basically, I couldn't have this issue as they'd not heard of it. But I do, I really do. The following is event id a summary of the errors returned: Event Type: Error Event Source: MsiInstaller Event Category: None Event ID: 1024 Date: 19/09/2006 Time: 13:14:23 User: TOBY-TABLET\Toby Computer: TOBY-TABLET Description: Product: Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003 - Update 'Visio 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2): VISIOSP2' could not be installed. When I reconsititute the data stringsthey all look, to me, like registry keys: 9151040-6000-11D3-8 CFE-0150048383C9 8B82536A-99F7-4815-9D9C-0725C56F345D Indeed, I can find these values many times in the registry, always as a value under another key and in a 'folder' named DefaultIcon. There is also a same-name folder for each under C:\WINDOWS\Installer. Yet, no matter what I do I always get a failure when running the installer. Anyone got any clues? It's driving me potty. PC: Tablet PC O/S: WinXP, SP2, tablet edition All software is a legal copy. All help gratefully received. 2007/2010 Update Rollups Posted on April 20, 2010 by Jan Egil Ring Have you ever tried to install an Exchange Server Update Rollup which ended with an error message? I recently did some troubleshooting on installing Exchange Server 2010 Update Rollup 3 and picked up some experiences I would like to share, in addition to provide some general guidelines for installing Exchange Update Rollups. The installation may fail when installing either manually by downloading the installation package or by using Windows Update. Afterwards event 1024 are logged to the application log stating that the installation failed with the error code 1603: This really doesnt help much, and in addition to the failed installation all Exchange-related services are now stopped and disabled, leaving the server offline.
Start by restoring the service-state. First, enable and start Windows Management Service using an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:
Get-Service Winmgmt | Set-Service –StartupType Automatic; Get-Service Winmgmt | Start-Service
Then run the ServiceControl.ps1 located in the Exchange bin-folder and the pass it the argument “AfterPatch”:
The server should now be restored to an operational state. Next, download the Exchange Update Rollup if you havent done that in the first installation attempt. Next, retry the installation from the elevated PowerShell promt using msiexec with the /lv parameter: msiexec /lv c:tempex-ur3-install.log /update C:tempExchange2010-KB981401-x64-en.msp This will instruct the Windows Installer service to log verbose output fro
