Cause: This error is caused due to the destination hard drive running a FAT32 File System. This File System is recognized by most computer operating systems, but has a 4 GB file transfer and creation limitation. This means that files cannot be created or transferred to the hard drive if the file or group of files are larger than 4GB. Solution: If running Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, or running Mac OSX, the external hard drive can be reformatted to either NTFS (Windows) or HFS+ (Mac) File Systems instead. These File Systems are not limited to a 4GB file size. For details on how to reformat a hard drive, please see Answer ID 3865: How to partition and format a WD drive on Windows and Mac OSX. More about : error copying files external drive RomDA_73 7 May 2009 19:14:32 IIRC, WD Passports have software that allow the owner external hard drive to "write-protect" the drive. Maybe that's what happened? Can you also try the drive on another computer? You can also check if there's really space left by going to Windows Disk Management (Windows+R, type "diskmgmt.msc", Press Enter). Last resort is to see if you can back-up the drive, format it, and try again. jmcbride1983 7 May 2009 22:30:59 Well as for the write-protect, I have never set that and I use this drive on a daily basis. I back up all my movies, games, music, etc. I just never had it this full. Disk Management shows that there is 298.02GB Total and 112.71GB Free(37%). I am stumped. This makes no sense to me. I am going to contact WD today and see what they say. If you think of anything else, I will be open for any advice. Thanks. ProductsHomearound the homeproductivityHow to Fix a Not Enough Free Disk Space ErrorHow to Fix a Not Enough Free Disk Space ErrorBy Stephen LilleyIf you're getting an error message on your computer that says that your computer doesn't have enough disk space, this means that your hard drive is almost filled to capacity. Certain processes that require space on your hard drive are unable to run because the room simply isn't there. You can fix this issue by getting rid of unnecessary files from your hard drive in a number of ways.Step 1Uninstall programs that you no longer use anymore. From the Control Panel (in the Start menu), open a program called "Programs and Features." This will show you every program that is installed on your computer. Go through this list, find programs that you no longer use and uninstall them using the "Remove" button at the top of the window.Step 2Delete any media files you no longer use as they take up a lot of room on your hard drive. Go through your media file collection and delete anything you no longer listen to or watch. Or, you could back all this content up onto an external hard drive or USB flash drive. This will get everything off of your main hard drive, freeing up as much space as possible.Step 3Compress your "C" drive. Open the "Computer" folder (in the Start menu) and right-click your "C" drive icon. In the "Properties" window for this drive, check the "Compress" option and click "Apply." This will compress all the files contained on the drive, freeing up as much space as possible and ensuring that you don't see the not enough disk space error for the foreseeable future.References & ResourcesMicrosoft: Uninstall or Change a ProgramComputerHope: Regaining Computer Hard Disk Drive SpaceRelatedGrandpa Needs a New Cell PhoneProductivityWaterproof Your Tech: Stay Dry, My FriendsProductivityHow to Print a Picture for a LocketProductivity5 Signs That Your Family Needs New PhonesProductivityWhat to Expect From a 2016 SmartphoneProductivityHOW WE SCOREABOUT USCONTACT USTERMS OF USEPRIVACY POLICY©2016 Demand Media, Inc.Login | Sign UpSign UpLog InCreate an account and join the conversation!Or Forgot Password?
