Customer lost internet connection (DSL). Upon having him run ipconfig /all from a dos window we get the error IP Configuration Fatal Error, Cannot read IP Configuration. I have changed out the NIC first http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r7983263-W98-IP-Configuration-Fatal-Error thinking it may be bad. No luck. I did find THIS Microsoft Knowledge base article. I followed all directions with one small glitch. There is no tcpip.sys file located in the c:\windows\system directory. I also could not extract it from the windows disk as it is not there. In addition to the windows article I also removed Everything from networking and reinstalled. Still no luck. Anyone have any suggestions other than reinstalling windows? I called ISP (cable modem), and tech had me type 'winipcfg' in 'run' and I get " Fatal Error - Cannot read IP configuration". He said you should have no problem accessing internet and that problem is in your system. It was working fine till yesterday. Any ideas on what to do? Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Network, and then verify that TCP/IP is installed. If TCP/IP is not installed, click Add, click Protocol, and then click Add again. Click Microsoft in the Manufacturer box, click TCP/IP, and then click Add. 3. If TCP/IP is installed, click your first network adapter, and then click Properties. NOTE: Perform this step for each network adapter. 4. Click the Bindings tab, and then verify that the TCP/IP check box has been selected. If the TCP/IP check box has not been selected, click to select the TCP/IP check box, and then click OK. Then try Winipcfg or Ipconfig thru the start run command.
 Go To Topic Listing Windows 98 All Activity Home Operating Systems Windows Legacy Operating Systems Window
