Used it earlier when BellSouth was helping me to get my w98 to connect to the internet, and it worked. Additional problems: Could only get to internet with w98 connected directly to the Westell modem. Would not, and still won't, connect through my D-Link router. The router works. Current setup is three computers connected to router, w98, wxp, wxp-laptop. wxp and wxp-laptop see each other on network, but w98 can't access network or be seen by the others. wxp and wxp-laptop access internet. The D-link network adapter card in the w98 is working according to Device Manager, but BellSouth's Connection Manager (that they say is worthless) says it is a Network adaptor error. On wxp, when I type ipconfig, it displays, but instantly closes, so that it is impossible to see what it says. There are thus several problems, but my first concern is the winipcfg failure. Can you help? I realize now that I did a very stupid thing. At one point I was looking through Device Manager and saw that I had, under network adapters, dial-up networking and one other, and I removed them, leaving my D-Link adapter. D

I could access the Internet from the PC and the laptop. Then I played with File Sharing in Win98. I don't think it's related, but now I can't access the Internet, and https://forums.techguy.org/threads/w98-winipcfg-reports-fatal-error-cannot-read-ip-configuration.272935/ I don't have an IP address on the laptop. The desktop (the one I'm typing on now) works fine. I have verified all the settings in TCP/IP and the DLink WiFi card. When I try to get the IP info (such as "winipcfg" or "ipconfig") I get an error message "Cannot read IP information". What is going on? I removed and reinstalled everything that pertains to the network. Should I reload Win98SE?? I have XP Home unopened, should I https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/cannot-read-ip-configuration-error-solved.1097866/ try that? I think it would be easier to reinstall Windows. Apparently, if you get this message, there are 2 basic causes. The Network Adapter is not bound to TCP/IP, or the TCP/IP stack is corrupted. Guess which one mine is. :| So would reloading Windows 98SE over the existing setup fix this without having to manually edit the registry? ANSWER: I reloaded Win98SE on the laptop. Took all of 20 mins. #2 JamesM3M5, Jul 6, 2003 (You must log in or sign up to post here.) Show Ignored Content Loading... When I use a proxy server, it will work for about 10 searches and then it will fail also. At that point I have no choice but to log out and start over. I believe that my TCP/IP is conflicting with my drivers. Any Suggestions. You may have Network for Clients installed which can cause the problem, or it is using the wrong TCP/IP. In Control Panel/Network, if you are not on a network and connecting thru a local ISP, then the following should be installed: TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter Dial Up Adapter Also under Primary Network Log In should be "Windows Login" Hope this Helps Murf Reply With Quote Quick Navigation Windows 95/98/ME Top Site Areas Settings Private Messages Subscriptions Who's Online Search Forums Forums Home Forums Center For Disease Control Security News / Warnings / Updates Preventative Medicine Intensive Care Unit SpywareDr - Resources To Help Keep Your Computer Secure Hardware Desktop Computer Hardware Laptops Networking Digital Imaging Home Entertainment SmartPhones and Tablets Software General & Business Software Internet Related Issues Web Design/Development Multimedia Gaming software Windows Operating Systems Windows 10 Windows 8 Windows 7 Windows Vista Windows XP Windows Server 2000-2012 Windows 2000 & NT Windows 95/98/ME Windows 3.x and DOS Linux & Unix Virtual Dr Community Introduce Yourself!
