got the card installed Friday night and everything was up and running. I could access the Internet from the PC and the laptop. Then I played with File Sharing in Win98. I don't think it's related, but https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/286748 now I can't access the Internet, and I don't have an IP address on the laptop. The desktop (the one I'm typing on now) works fine. I have verified all the settings in TCP/IP and the DLink WiFi card. When I try to get the IP info (such as "winipcfg" or "ipconfig") I get an error message "Cannot read IP information". What is going on? I removed and reinstalled everything that pertains to the network. Should https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/cannot-read-ip-configuration-error-solved.1097866/ I reload Win98SE?? I have XP Home unopened, should I try that? I think it would be easier to reinstall Windows. Apparently, if you get this message, there are 2 basic causes. The Network Adapter is not bound to TCP/IP, or the TCP/IP stack is corrupted. Guess which one mine is. :| So would reloading Windows 98SE over the existing setup fix this without having to manually edit the registry? ANSWER: I reloaded Win98SE on the laptop. Took all of 20 mins. #2 JamesM3M5, Jul 6, 2003 (You must log in or sign up to post here.) Show Ignored Content Loading... I am struggling in an academic world, still using Windows95. I have recently been experiencing problems with IP configurations. I have tried some of your tips from the past, but still have some problematic systems. Sometimes I cannot resolve the "Fatal cannot read IP Config" message after running WINIPCFG. I also have a fatal error 100 few systems on campus that upon initial boot up, do not get assigned an IP address. When you run WINIPCFG it will then provide that computer with an IP address, but this should be done automatically with DHCP. We use Compaq systems (DPEP series) and not all of them behave this way. Why would TCP/IP work after the system is setup, then fail shortly after? Any tips would be appreciated. The blip in the network is my guess since we seldom have any real stability. Regardless, the end user is very annoyed at the additional steps to take to obtain an IP address. We've replaced the jacks, the wires (from the nic, and from the patch panel to the hub), reseated the boards and reset the hub, still no solution. After spending days replacing the nic, reinstalling TCP/IP and a whole line of other possibilities, I asked for a static IP address. Four more occurances have cropped up around campus, in other buildings. Reply With Quote 09-27-2000,01:14 PM #3 MadMatt View Profile View Forum Posts Senior Member J

Do you get the error only when you run winipcfg, or does it occur at some other time? TCPIP is loaded in the network control panel? Reply With Quote January 28th, 2001,10:34 AM #3 mrockx Guest yes to both questions. we are using tcpip and the error occurs with using novell client version 3.1 on a system running win95 and when we run winipcfg. Reply With Quote January 28th, 2001,03:11 PM #4 pretzelboy Guest Do you have the directory ws2backup on the system? The problem is usually caused by a corrupt installation of the Winsock 2.0 update. Try reverting back to the old winsock configuration using the ws2backup files. Then try re-installing the update.
