$db = new PDO('mysql:host='.$host.';port='.$port.';dbname='.$db, $user, $pass, $options); } catch(Exception $e){ $GLOBALS['errors'][] = $e; } Now, I want to use this database handle to do a request using this code: try{ $query = $db->prepare("INSERT INTO users (...) VALUES (...);"); $query->execute(array( '...' => $..., '...' => $... )); } catch(Exception $e){ $GLOBALS['errors'][] = $e; } Here is the problem: When the connection to the DB is OK, everything works, When the connection fails but I don't use the

DB, I have the $GLOBALS['errors'][] array and the script is still running afterwards, When the connection to the DB has failed, I get the following fatal error: Notice: Undefined variable: db in C:\xampp\htdocs[...]\test.php on line 32 Fatal error: Call to a member function prepare() on a non-object in C:\xampp\htdocs[...]\test.php on line 32 Note: Line 32 is the $query = $db->prepare(...) instruction. That is to say, the script crashes, and the try/catch seems to be useless. Do you know why this second try/catch don't works and how to solve it? Thanks for the help! EDIT: There are some really good replies. I've validated one which is not exactly what I wanted to do, but which is probably the best approach. php try-catch fatal-error share|improve this question edited Oct 17 '12 at 7:04 asked Oct 17 '12 at 6:35 Ploppe 61117 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 18 down vote accepted try/catch blocks only work for thrown exceptions (throw Exception or a subclass of Exception must be called). You cannot catch fatal errors using try/catch. If your DB connection cannot be established, I would consider it fatal since you probably need your DB to do anything meaningful on the page. PDO will throw an exception if the connection cannot be established. Your specific problem is that $db is not defined w

SomeOperation() may fail causing other subtle, difficult to figure out problems, but you would never know if you silently drop the exception. share|improve this answer edited Jan 25 '10 at 14:36 answered Jan 25 '10 at 14:09 Doug T. 41k1693165 Gah! This is especially true if you catch any exception with catch(Exception $ex) {} –dbemerlin Jan 25 '10 at 14:13 1 so how do you log it and still continue ? –numerical25 Feb 11 '13 at 14:18 @numerical25 using something like monolog: github.com/Seldaek/monolog –Petah Nov 28 '13 at 0:12 Best pratice is to use: Try -> Catch (handle Exception) -> Finally (where finall
can’t cache FATAL Error because those are FATAL. This will be useful when you want to show specific well formatted error page rather than PHP Error, when your program http://www.xpertdeveloper.com/2013/01/catch-fatal-errors-in-php/ ends unexpectedly due to some fatal errors. We will use register_shutdown_function function to catch http://php.net/manual/en/function.set-exception-handler.php the fatal errors and format as we need. Keep in mind that register_shutdown_function will gets executed after your script execution ends either it is successful or ends with any error. So before performing any action in this function we need to check if really any fatal occurs or not. If occurs then we will show error page else fatal error it will continue to run as it is. So to get the details of the last error we will use error_get_last() function. Code function catch_fatal_error() { // Getting Last Error $last_error = error_get_last(); // Check if Last error is of type FATAL if(isset($last_error['type']) && $last_error['type']==E_ERROR) { // Fatal Error Occurs // Do whatever you want for FATAL Errors } } register_shutdown_function('catch_fatal_error');function catch_fatal_error() { // Getting Last Error $last_error = error_get_last(); catch fatal error // Check if Last error is of type FATAL if(isset($last_error['type']) && $last_error['type']==E_ERROR) { // Fatal Error Occurs // Do whatever you want for FATAL Errors } } register_shutdown_function('catch_fatal_error'); Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Related Posts PHP Error HandlingPHP Error ReportingEnable PHP Error logging using htaccessType Hinting in PHPAbstract in PHP Written by Avinash Avinash Zala is leading various projects which deals with the various technology involved with the web. So if you have set error logging then you must check for last error.
