the one in the topic. I have already done the typical "search-fu" and "google-fu", and have already attempted the instructions as described in here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...8142-EYLV-8657 No joy. Details of this case: Steam account worked properly. Computer died. Replaced mainboard https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2912-YOHZ-1403 with identical model. Steam account worked when computer was started. Steam required an update. Computer continued to have issues (automatically rebooted on its own) Attempted to log into Steam (with problematic computer) and received this error. At this point, I searched out for possible solutions, and followed the instructions provided, with no resolution of the issue. I decided to attempt a new installation of OS (WinXP Pro, SP3) to see if this would resolve the issue. New OS http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=766313 installation. Only software installed are chipset/audio/video drivers, Windows Updates, Firefox. Nothing else has been loaded on this computer. Steam installed, goes through the motions for updating itself, and then the same error message is observed. Error occurs after the name/password is entered and connection is attempted. Dialog box appears with the reported message, and if I click "OK", steam automatically shuts down. Task Manager does not display any other copies of Steam running concurrently. Oddities noted: Steam installation appears to "blink" at the 29% mark, comes back at 0%, then skips back to 30% and finishes. Installation completes, then I receive the "login" window. After logging in, Steam says "Updating Steam platform files". The progress bar reaches 100%, and I received the dialog box error message again. Again, clicking "OK" just closes Steam. 12-11-2008, 11:33 PM #3 Muertog Guest Posts: n/a Update on this issue (again): After trying to connect for 15 minutes, I am finally able to sign into Steam, and then was able to reinstall L4D. After installation, started up the game. Hosted a lobby, invited a couple friends, and started playing. Game was rather choppy,
