Ext4-fs Dm-2 Previous I/o Error To Superblock Detected
Subject: fsck failing to notice that the block device was pulled out from under it? Date: Mon, 25 May 2015 23:59:44 +0200 ext4-fs (dm-0) previous i/o error to superblock detected Hello, tl;dr: it seems like fsck fails to notice when the block unable to read itable block device disappears from under it. I have the following setup: * external USB disk * a partition with buffer i/o error on device dm-0 LUKS in it * ext4 filesystem inside the LUKS block device While doing backups to it I noticed that after some time backups would fail with an error (failed fsck to write, ). In the following log I'm attaching the disk, enabling LUKS and mounting the disk and then starting the backup, which will fail after a while: May 25 11:39:18 hier kernel: [76241.727367] usb 4-1.1: new high-speed USB device number 6 using ehci-pci May 25 11:39:19 hier kernel: [76241.881892] usb 4-1.1: New USB device found, idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=3320 May 25 11:39:19 hier kernel: [76241.881902] usb 4-1.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1 May 25 11:39:19 hier kernel: [76241.881907] usb 4-1.1: Product: Expansion Desk May 25 11:39:19 hier kernel: [76241.881911] usb 4-1.1: Manufacturer: Seagate May 25 11:39:19 hier kernel: [76241.881915] usb 4-1.1: SerialNumber: NA4JDN4N May 25 11:39:19 hier kernel: [76241.882652] usb-storage 4-1.1:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected May 25 11:39:19 hier kernel: [76241.883007] scsi7 : usb-storage 4-1.1:1.0 May 25 11:39:20 hier kernel: [76242.907527] usb 4-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 6 May 25 11:39:30 hier kernel: [76252.987833] usb 4-1.1: new high-speed USB device number 7 using ehci-pci May 25 11:39:30 hier kernel: [76253.142659] usb 4-1.1: New USB device found, idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=3320 May 25 11:39:30 hier kernel: [76253.142669] usb 4-1.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1 May 25 11:39:30 hier kernel: [76253.142674] usb 4-1.1: Product: Expansion Desk May 25 11:39:30 hier kernel: [76253.142678] usb 4-1.1: Manufacturer: Seagate May 25 11:39:30 hier kernel: [76253.142681] usb 4-1.1: SerialNumber: NA4JDN4N May 25 11:39:30 hier kernel: [76253.143465] usb-storage 4-1.1:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected May 25 11:39:30 hier kernel: [76253.144285]

I am trying to copy files to it using rsync. Here is the problem; after the process starts, I obtain 'input/output error'. Rsync continues the process, however I cannot read the harddisk directory. This problem only occurs after a while, like one hour later. Previously I used this harddisk to backup my MacBook and I did not receive this error; the process continued like eight hours without an error. I also use another 1 TB external harddisk without any problem. I used GParted to partition the disk with gtp partition table and ext4 format. I ran fsck command and did not obtain any errors. I also include the last lines of the output of dmesg command. I am on a Dell Latitude with Linux Mint 17, if this is relevant. Cheers. [88701.514439] usb 4-1: new Supe

The errors shown are:Task [Test] has failed to backup version [xxx] due to [failure to create snapshot].Task [Test] has failed to backup shared folder [homes] due to [error occurred previous i/o error while copying files].Backups are going to an external 2TB SATA drive that is 47% full and running great. No idea why this is failing. In addition to this, I have only one partial backup per day now, not even a partial every hour (using Smart Recycle right now). Why? Shouldn't it keep 24 hourly versions no matter what, then daily for the last month and then weekly after that? Top sylvainj I'm New! I'm copying on an external HD (USB)It also seems that once you got a "partial" backup, all the files that are missing in this backup -- but are present in previous ones -- will get a full copy again. In my case, this means that I have right now two or three copies of a few 100G ... Not nice.It would also be helpful if the log message was more informative ... My guess is that the USB has some glitches ... Top swd I'm New! Device-mapper Snapshot vs. Layered Fs solution (AUFS or Overlayfs) Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] users at lists.fedoraproject.org I tend to run Live Linux on laptop for months without a shutdown (suspend / resume only). Ubuntu and Mint work in this mode well, until recently I want to give Fedora a chance, but it failed with IO Errors like this, when I did sudo yum install something (or dnf install something), this is always reproducible kernel panic whenever I run it on laptop physical hardware, or in kvm, with the current Fedora 22 Workstation image, I tested a few other spins as well, failed the same https://getfedora.org/en/workstation/download/ https://labs.fedoraproject.org/security/download/index.html I wonder is this a well known issue ? on Fedora Bugzilla database ? If under Live OS mode, the / doesn't support writing how can it be called Live ? I researched a little more and figured out because Fedora Live mode runs on top of dev-mapper snapshot driver while Ubuntu runs on Overlayfs that looks more stable; wonder are there some technical reasons why Fedora use dev-mapper snapshot such immature driver ?
