This is a small replaceable lithium battery cell 3V housed on the motherboard and should be easily accessible for changeout. They are normally given a lifespan of 2 - 5 years and are responsible for preserving all the sconfiguration settings in the BIOS - including the time. On some systemboard the usual tell-tale sign that it needs replacing is not keeping the proper time, and the F1 prompt appearing sometimes on bootup. RE: I/O Conflict Ports: 2f8 leah977 (TechnicalUser) (OP) 8 Jan 02 09:25 OH!By the way, our new motherboard is the Abit KT7A running the AMD Socket-A Thunderbird 1.2GHz processor. RE: I/O Conflict Ports: 2f8 bjverzal (MIS) 8 Jan 02 09:26 Check the BIOS configuration on the serial ports.Perhaps you have 2 ports using the same address/IRQ.As for the floppy, perhaps the floppy cable is installed upside down ?Bill. RE: I/O Conflict Ports: 2f8 omnipitus (IS/IT--Management) 8 Jan 02 09:51 You haveconflict with one of your COM ports(COM2 I think). You can either disable the COM port in your BIOS or remove one card at a time to find which one it conflicts with and try to change the settings on the card itself.I see this alot with ISA Modems RE: I/O Conflict Ports: 2f8 dxd (TechnicalUser) 8 Jan 02 11:51 I assume since he formatted the hard drive
ports : 2F8' I can no longer use my modem because of this. I http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/archive/index.php/t-14625.html think someone changed something at the startup. Thanks. 14-01-2002, 01:25 PM2F8 is traditionally allocated to Com2 or Com4. Do you have 2 devices using Com2/Com4 at present, say a serial mouse and your modem? If so, set one or the other to the correct Com port. If you have an internal modem, the Com port it uses is fixed i/o error and you won't be able to change that without changing some jumpers on the modem card itself. Best you change the other device. If not, the answer is probably in your BIOS settings. Enter the BIOS setup (the info on how to do that with your particular BIOS will be visible in the first couple of black screens when you i/o error 2f8 boot up) and locate the com port settings. Check that no two ports are using 2F8. If they are, then change one to one of the other values NOT IN USE BY ANY OTHER PORT. Exit the setup and when prompted, say yes to saving the changes. When the PC reboots, see if the messages are gone. If not, re-enter BIOS setup and recheck the addresses to ensure there are still no two com ports using the same address. If that works, when Windows restarts, use Modems in Control Panel to ensure the modem is set to the right port (whichever it is physically connected to if it's an external modem, or whichever it is set to if it's internal). If it is, then it should work. Good luck :-) 14-01-2002, 02:04 PMThere is one more thing to add there. If you have a mouse on com1 and nothing connected to com2 disable com2 in the Bios. 14-01-2002, 06:08 PMGood thinking Mike, :-) Powered by vBulletin Version 4.2.2 Copyright © 2016 vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
