Lucid P Level 1 (0 points) Q: brand new drive - kernel disk2s1: I/O error (I put this in the Mac Pro thread because I am on a Mac Pro. The computer is fine. The problem is with a new drive.)I've looked at disk0s2 i/o error mac a few threads that address this problem and none of them treat this message lightly: "kernel disk2s1: mac disk1 i/o error I/O error"I've read a bunch of answers but feel a little unsure how to respond in my own situation:I bought a new Western Digital Caviar Black

2TB bare drive to use as a clone drive. I plan to back up my programs disk and scratch disk in my Mac Pro (5,1) running OS X 10.6. Ultimately, it will go in an enclosure, but I've been running tests on it
Disk0s2 I/o Error The Volume Macintosh Hd Could Not Be Verified Completely
while it sits in one of the internal HD bays.I started a 7-times erase procedure last night and woke up to find that Disk Utility logged this message three times: "kernel disk2s1: I/O error". (Looking at System Profiler, this number matches the WD drive I just bought.) Each error was about 4hrs 53mins and some seconds apart... minutes before the end of each pass. I verified the status in DU and it passed or "seems okay". I should mention that I stopped the procedure during the 4th what is disk0s2 pass. So I got this message with each completed pass.I also ran a SMARTReporter, long, self-test. It also passed, however, right before it finished, the drive got loud for a couple of minutes and then sorta cut out.I've read that a loud sound could indicate a bad sector, which DU and SMARTReporter wouldn't likely catch. (However, it could also be that the process was just finishing up. And Caviar Black drives have been known to get loud. Although this one has been quiet otherwise.)Since this is meant to be a long-term, back-up drive, I don't want to take any chances with it. 1) Should I get a program that can do a surface scan? If so, which is good? I'm not reading good reports about TechToolPro for most of what you pay for. 2) If I do go through with a surface scan, what do I do in either event (pass or fail?) This drive showed up yesterday, so I'm in the first thirty days from purchase. I'm open to swapping it for another but would like to avoid unecessary lost time and money returning it if this is fixable. Thanks for your advice in advance. Hello! Im posting here out of desperation for some kind of help with my Powerbook. It is a problem that has only started to occur in the last few days. The hard disk will begin to seek more aggressively causing itunes to skip and applications http://www.mac-forums.com/showthread.php?t=20062 to halt. The colour wheel appears whilst the disk continues to seek and then all of a sudden it will go back to working correctly. The more applications running the more frequent the slow downs. I have been watching activity monitor whilst it occurs and none of the programs are using large amounts of processor time, infact the activity monitor itself is always on top with about 10%. Activity monitor does report large amounts of disk activity. I checked console and the system logs are reporting the following: Jun 11 20:23:13 isunk kernel[0]: disk0s9: I/O error. Every few minutes, I get freezing and "kernel disk0s2: I/O Error" in my console. I did some research, and found that my hard drive (a WD I had for only a year) may be failing. I've had failed hard drives before, and this doesn't seem like a failure because the hard disk0s2 i/o error drive is working quietly (there's no clicking noise at all even during the freezes) and I get a verified SMART status in Disk Utility. Are there any alternative theories to the kernel disk0s2: I/O Error in console or is it definitely an impending hard drive failure? Could it be due to overheating? WD drives get really hot. Any theories? hard-drive imac hang kernel share|improve this question asked May 29 '13 at 22:48 norotia 82 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted That is definitely the sign of some failure related to your HDD. The SMART status is not real helpful in many cases either; for instance if you have bad blocks it probably won't detect them. My recommendations would be back-up everything, then reformat the drive and see if the problem persists - or send it back to WD, since your HDD should be covered under warranty. share|improve this answer answered May 29 '13 at 23:07 Mr. Russian 842 Can I fix whatever's wrong with it myself? –norotia May 29 '13 at 23:42 Yes and no. You can backup your data, then reformat the drive with the Zero Out Data (Write Zeroes) option using Disk Utility. This will only repair soft errors. I
I deleted my old backups, now that I my disk is falling apart and I have no backup. Arrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhh! Sunday, 14:09 Frantically copying documents and, more importantly, mp3s to an external. Sunday, 14:14 Damn, The Clash got corrupted. Sunday, 15:17 Copying stuff to an external drive in the Finder sucks! As every corrupt file causes the whole copy process to fail. Having more luck using mv in the terminal, as it will continue to copy despite finding corrupt files. Sunday, 19:03 Erased disk and re-installed OS X, hoping that has fixed the bad disk sectors. For me the hard drive was getting almost full, so I think there is an issue with Skype mounting because there is no space and then the you get the IO error. Tell me if that works.
