Osx I/o Error
Slow Downs and Issues.. Hello! Im posting here out of desperation for some kind of help with my Powerbook. It is a problem that has only started to occur in the last few days. The hard disk will begin to seek more aggressively causing itunes to skip and applications to halt. The colour wheel appears whilst the disk continues to seek and then all of a sudden it will go back to working correctly. The more applications running disk0s2 i/o error fix the more frequent the slow downs. I have been watching activity monitor whilst it occurs and none of the programs are using large amounts of processor time, infact the activity monitor itself is always on top with about 10%. Activity monitor does report large amounts of disk activity. I checked console and the system logs are reporting the following: Jun 11 20:23:13 isunk kernel[0]: disk0s9: I/O error. Jun 11 20:45:57 isunk kernel[0]: disk0s9: I/O error. Jun 11 20:46:38 isunk kernel[0]: disk0s9: I/O error. Jun 11 20:48:00 isunk kernel[0]: disk0s9: I/O error. Naturally I got a bit panicky at this and decided to reboot off the install DVD and run disk utility... I ran all available first aid :doctor: procedures and the disk passed the tests. Nothing on my system has changed, no software or hardware changes have been made. Im totally confused by it... and

For about a couple of weeks now I've noticed that if my iBook (G3) is on for a long period it'll start making this clicking sound and eventually thereafter hang. The only solution being to let it cool down and https://macosx.com/threads/i-o-errors.236788/ reboot. Well, Friday it started saying that it lacked space on the startup disk although I had over 2 gigs. Today, it took much longer than usual to boot and applications are taking a long time to launch. So I ventured into the logs and there I see in the system.log: kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error disk0s3 is mounted as the root directory and I have no other disks on the system really. (there are 2 /dev and a /.vol, /Network, /automount, ...) which is repeating about every 30 secs. Looking back in the logs however, I couldn't find any other such errors except for today. But then I only went back about a week. I have backed up most everything, so I am not worried about whether I lose the HD or not, but I would hope to save it somehow. What are my options? Seems like there's a boot disk solution. That is, insert the boot disk and enter a command console and from there do something like fsk. #1 cavaughan, Aug 8, 2005 ElDiabloConCaca uix_expand uix_collapse U.S.D.A. Tech Specs: Macbook Pro Early 2008 4 GB ram 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT HDD/SSD hybrid drive (installed late 2010) Up to date firmware (SD24) a couple weeks after installation (no problems since, until now) OS X 10.6.6 BootCamp Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit I have a small portion of the console output here (drop box link to .rtf) Windows 7 disk0s2 i/o error Partition works fine. Boots normal, operates normal. I get the line kernel disk0s2: I/O error a lot. It is reproducible on: Right click on anything on the dock (~5-10s hang, no beachball) Wrench icon in Chrome (latest version) (~45-60s hang, no menu, beachball, then ~20-40s hang, menu open, no beachball) Resolution change or external monitor connected (dvi-vga, been using it for > a year) (~20-30s hang on blue screen, then ~10-40s hang on desktop, readjusting sizes) Choosing a space from Spaces (~1-6s hang) It also happens other times, that I'm sure have a pattern, I just haven't seen yet, but I don't think it is random. What I have tried: Using Disk Utility from within OS X to verify the partition, check/repair permissions no major problems found Using Disk utility from the snow leopard disk to repair the partition no problems found do a disk check from within windows 7 Using OnyX to clear system/user cache No effect Using OnyX to check S.M.A.R.T status Verified Using OnyX to verify disk No problems found Using original system disks to perform "Apple Hardware Diagnostics" (quick and extended) No problems found Any ideas? I haven't yet tried reinstalling OSX. I have fairly up to date backups (time machine in OS X and manual in Windows 7) - but I'd prefer to not have to format the hard drive. Edit: Boot time is ~4
