did using a live CD. After this, I was already able to boot to the desktop but everything is so sluggish. Apps would turn gray for seconds. Sometimes other apps wont start at all. You could try appending "ide=nodma" to the GRUB command at boot time. Hit a key to get the GRUB menu, type "a" to append to the "kernel" line. If that works edit /boot/grub/grub.conf to make it permanent. If not, you probably need to replace the drive.
