After several reboots I managed to close most of my applications but the problem presisted. My free disk space is

about 11GB. I opened “Spotlight” and saw the file indexing process in progress. After waiting for about half an hour I have decided to turn the indexing off, and did that through terminal. The slow performance persisted and when I opened the “Console”; I am getting PM kernel: disk0s2: I/O error Every second. As per Google search this is an HD problem. But how and why? Among this error I am also getting a bunch of repeating messages: Aug 4 22:37:03 MacBook–Air–2 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.iCloudHelper[4459]): Exited with code: 1 Aug 4 22:37:03 MacBook–Air–2 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.iCloudHelper[4459]): XPC Service could not exec(3). Every few minutes, I get freezing and "kernel disk0s2: I/O Error" in my console. I did some research, and found that my hard drive (a WD I had for only a year) may be failing. I've had failed hard drives before, and this doesn't seem like a failure because the hard drive is working quietly (there's no clicking noise at all even during the freezes) and I get a verified SMART status in Disk Utility. Are there any alternative theories to the http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/92652/freezing-disk-i-o-problems-imac kernel disk0s2: I/O Error in console or is it definitely an impending hard drive failure? Could it be due to overheating? WD drives get really hot. Any theories? hard-drive imac hang kernel share|improve this question asked May 29 '13 at 22:48 norotia 82 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted That is definitely the sign of some failure related to your HDD. The SMART status is not real helpful in many cases either; for instance if you have bad blocks it probably won't detect them. My recommendations would be back-up everything, then reformat the drive and see if the problem persists - or send it back to WD, since your HDD should be covered under warranty. share|improve this answer answered May 29 '13 at 23:07 Mr. Russian 842 Can I fix whatever's wrong with it myself? –norotia May 29 '13 at 23:42 Yes and no. You can backup your data, then reformat the drive with the Zero Out Data (Write Zeroes) option using Disk Utility. This will only repair soft errors. If there are hardware errors they cannot be repaired with Disk Utility and you'll want to replace the drive. –Mr. Russian May 30 '13 at 0:23 What do you mean by "soft errors"? –norotia May 30 '13 at 2:18 @norotia - info: soft errors –Mr. Russian May 31 '13 at 5:30 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draf
