Compaq has a button that you can press while doing this.. First, make sure that the system can boot from a diskette. If you do not have a bootable diskette, then you will need to make one on a different computer and try to make it a Windows 95 Computer. remember to copy some additional files of use to the diskette like fdisk.exe and sys.com which should be in the windows\command directory of the other PC. Your problem could be as simple as a lack of operating system files on the hard drive, or as complex as a defective hard drive. It would be best to boot off of the diskette and see if you can even reach the hard drive using the fdisk utility. If so, try transferring the correct system files to the hard drive using the Windows 95 sys command. If this fails, you may need to recover the system. I believe that this system does not have a CDROM and Diskette at the same time, so you will either need a parallel port CD Rom or to use diskettes to recover the system. 0 Message Author Comment by:flafee1998-07-09 your answer is goob, but is not enought for my problem. I try to boot by diskette, but this fails.. Should be a solution but i think that is by hardware way, because the error comes by bios, and i can´t reach it too. regards 0 LVL 1 Overall: Level 1 Message Expert

And it's not booting from a CD at all still. That's why I'm at such a ibm error loss... Also the system keeps coming up with the 174 error message...anybody w/ a 600e know what's going on? DanmanX, Apr 4, 2005 #16 Jedi_Master Joined: Mar 12, 2002 Messages: 5,520 With the 600's ( and many Thinkpads ), in the BIOS you will have to go and change the boot drive(s) ( it's been a while ), but there is a menu where ibm error 00174 you will have to select the cd-rom as a valid boot drive ( don't remember the menu where it is )... then there is a menu for commit changes ( maybe, like I said it's been a while ), then exit... But...if you can get into the BIOS, and have a bootable CD-ROM, you should be able to install the OS... Like I said, it's been a while since I've been in the BIOS of a Thinkpad, but the settings are there... This is entirely typical...when the battery went bad, you lost the CMOS configuration. Now you have to re-enter it along with the time and date. BUT if the DEFAULT config is good enough, then you only need enter te time and date. winbob, Apr 4, 2005 #19 Jedi_Master Joined:
