When I turn the machine on it freezes after the IBM Thinkpad Logo screen and shows ERROR 0175: BAD CRC1, STOP POST TASK. I've done quite a bit of research on this error online and on the forum here. After initially calling IBM support, they recommended that I buy and replace the CMOS battery. I replaced the battery yesterday, but I'm still experiencing the same error and the machine is still failing to boot properly. I now suspect that there is a malfunction with the system board. I researched and found another site last night (www.allservice.ro) that offers software to fix this CRC1 Error, but this requires soldering the eeprom chip underneath the RAM cards, providing a dump and rewriting the eeprom. With my lack of computer hardware experience, I'm afraid that if I do this, I could permanently damage the machine. I located one person, who was very highly recommended, that can repair the CRC error for $100 or replace the system board for $200, but this is without any guarantees that the CRC error will or will not return. Does anyone have any new advice on fixing this BAD CRC1 error for the T series? Is the cost of this repair worth it....? If not, I am considering buying another T21 and inserting my old hard drive into the machine for recovery. Will my hardrive (Hitachi Travelstar 20GB) be compatible with any T21 model? I can't currently afford a newer model, so I would use this other T21 as a band-aid until I can afford a T60 or T43. Do you think buying a second T21 is worth it? Or are these T-series
Error message 0175, Bad CRC1, stop POST task Discussion in 'Hardware' started by brandonscott11, Dec 15, 2006. Should I be replacing the lithium backup battery? or would that cause this error message? I have also read that it is the eeprom chip that is corrupt. I can't get to the IBM BIOS setup Utility, or the http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=33148 temporary boot devices. Any ideas on how I can fix this or what the problem is? Thanks, Brandon brandonscott11, Dec 15, 2006 #1 Mada_Milty MajorGeek Yes, it may be caused by a dying CMOS battery, and for the cost of one (approx. $5 CDN), it is typically worth eliminating as a suspect. They are usually CR2032s, and can be found at most electronics stores like FutureShop, RadioShack, The Source, etc. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/help-error-message-0175-bad-crc1-stop-post-task.110925/ You might also test your memory. I recommend Memtest86+ for the job. Mada_Milty, Dec 15, 2006 #2 brandonscott11 Private E-2 Thanks for the Advice, I tried a different stick of ram in it and it still had the same error, I also removed the lithium backup battery overnight and put it back in this morning and still get the same screen, are the lithium backup battery and the CMOS battery the same thing? Thanks Again, Brandon brandonscott11, Dec 15, 2006 #3 kjb125 Private First Class Yo...i think its going to be a motherboard issue (ahh..time to replace/fix) Here is were u can find IBM error codes: http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/sit...LWIK-3SR4PW&selectarea=SUPPORT&tempselected=5 kjb125, Dec 15, 2006 #4 kjb125 Private First Class just put your error code into the search bar on the Support and Downloads page...your code is at the top, i believe!! kjb125, Dec 15, 2006 #5 (You must log in or sign up to reply here.) This error is generated due to a couple of different reasons. First, there may actually be a problem with the power circuitry and the CRC function is actually doing it's job reporting the error. There are several tests you can perform (described below) to tell if this is the case ibm error 0175 with your system. Second, this bad CRC error can be generated by sudden power loss to the system, especially if the system loses power during boot up or POST process. If this is the case with your system, we can repair this error. There is some work involved and the cost mentioned below is well justified. Below is the standard reply email that we send to CRC inquiries that will hopefully help you determine if your system is a good candidate for a CRC recovery. ========================================= In some rare cases there really is a problem with the system board and the CRC checksum routine is actually doing it's job. If this is the case, you will see erratic power behavior, random shutdowns / freezing / erratic power behavior on power up, before the CRC error surfaced. We cannot guarantee our CRC correction will last when power problems exist in the motherboard. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the CRC recovery cost. Our time is money and the programmers we hire to correct the CRC information cost money. With that said... Most of the time, CRC errors are generated from a password removal attempt or sudden (user created) "Shutdown" or "Restart" condition and these situations are repairable. How can you tell if your ThinkPad is a good candidate for a CRC repair? We suggest you try the following tests: 1) Start the system and wa
It hangs the with error: " 0175 : Bad CRC1, Stop POST task" . Does anyone know how to reset the CRC Checksum on the mainboard? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Fausto 10-01-2003, 01:11 PM Ol'Tunzafun I don't think this is going to be as simple as resetting CMOS, which you could do by removing the button cell battery from the motherboard while you are gone to the store to get another (typically a CR2032) battery. By the time you return to replace that battery, the power sustaining the CMOS program will have drained and CMOS settings will revert to default. Whether or not this solves the problem, the cost is minimal and it will possibly save problems in future. Having said all that, in view of the fact that it will not complete POST, I would surmise that this is a BIOS checksum error rather than a CMOS checksum error and you will likely have to reflash the BIOS. If you have not done this before, follow the "readme" instructions to a tee, although the IBM process seems to be quite straight forward. http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site...GR-4JWNJC.html 10-01-2003, 01:39 PM fausto I understand your point ... I dunno how I can flash my BIOS since that machine freezes B4 it gets to the the floppy seek stage :( ... I am trying to avoid replacing the board. Any more suggestions? Cheers, Fausto 10-01-2003, 02:26 PM Ol'Tunzafun The BIOS ROM chip is usually replaceable. You can send them away to be reprogrammed or replaced. Wimsbios would be a good place to start looking for options. I notice that they have a link to Badflash which sells replacements, if it comes to that. 10-01-2003, 02:26 PM Baddog http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site...id=MIGR-4PEN8X :( 10-01-2003, 02:59 PM Ol'Tunzafun Quote: Originally posted by Baddog http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site...id=MI
