Answer This issue was reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# MNAA8TV5YD and is fixed in 9.0. Background for previous releases; Normally, the Ambiguous Name dialog box for Recipient Name Lookup appears if multiple matches of a name are found and any of the following fields are different: FullName (first value) AltFullName (first value) MailAddress MailDomain The Ambiguous Name dialog box displays these four fields along with the Location value for each choice to help the user determine which address should be used. NOTE: Type-ahead functionality has its own Ambiguous Dialog. The difference can be determined by the presence of the above columns. Determining if the typed name is ambiguous: 1. If there is only one matching name ( Fullname field, first value) in each of the personal and server address books, the Ambiguous Name dialog is skipped. 2. If there is at least one matching name and the four key fields are the same, the Ambiguous Name dialog is skipped. 3. If there is at least one matching name and any of the four key fields are different, the Ambiguous Name dialog displays. The dialog box displays the values of the four fields along with the Location field. NOTE: The Location column is initially hidden. You must drag a column separator to the left to display it. 4. If the MailAddress field is null in the local Contact Document, then the name is skipped. This occurs when you initially copy the Person Document locally. In this case, the MailAddress field in the local copy is null and is not considered during name resolution. Special Case : If the local contact contains a MailAddress value (meaning the field is no longer Null), it is now a candidate for ambiguity. However, if one matching name is found at the server and one is found locally, the Ambiguous Name dialog box does not display. However, this special case no longer applies if there is more than one duplicate on the server. This occurs if the Person Document is copied to another address book that is available via Directory Assistance. This issue was reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# JHOD5LMKWH. The workaround is to eliminate the duplicate name at the server and incorporate any extra information into the main Person Document. Troubleshooting hint: When troubleshooting name lookup, you can add the following lines to the server and/or client's notes.ini file: Debug_

When I'm send an email to contacts in my personal address book. I get the Ambiguous name dialog box. Why is Notes http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21108944 acting stupid ? "I" selected who I wanted to send it to! I don't want to re-select every person again. Is thier a patch to disable this? Is there something I need to do to my address book to fix this. I'm not sure what the use of it is in the first place? When I select contacts from my company address book, I don't see it. You'd think this is where it would popup - not http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd6forum.nsf/55c38d716d632d9b8525689b005ba1c0/88d96f1f7370ddf4852570060072f52f?OpenDocument my personal book. Name Type-ahead (Type-ahead for short) that is meant to assist you in the addressing of your newly composed e-mails. This feature returns a match as quickly as http://uwindsor.ca/units/its/insight/insight.nsf/02a9519ab8fd7c53852567d700603db9/a0bb412b9de8d8f78525735a003e5d95!OpenDocument possible while you are still typing an address or name in the To, Cc http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13069812/avoid-type-ahead-searching-users-personal-contact-list-in-a-lotus-notes-name-f or Bcc field of a new memo. You may not be aware, however, that Notes has another related but completely separate feature called Recipient Name Lookup (Name Lookup for short). While Type-ahead always returns the first match, this feature returns a complete list of possible names, based on what you type in the lotus notes To, Cc or Bcc fields in a new memo but is activated with a F9 key or Send button. The exact behaviour of both of these features is controlled by the three settings stored in your Notes Location document in the Mail section (see Figure 1). With both features enabled (default setting), precedence is given to Type-ahead. By default, Type-ahead searches your local Address Book first then Public lotus notes ambiguous Directory on the server trying to find a match to the text string that you typed in. In most cases, it is enough to type in several characters of the person's last name to find a match. But what happens when what you typed can be matched to more than one entry in the address books? Furthermore, what if there are two or more users in the directory that have exactly the same name, that is first name and last name? In our staff directory, we currently have several people who share the same first name and last name. How can you tell that the name returned by the Type-ahead belongs to the person that you want to send your e-mail to? This article will demystify the Type-ahead and related Name Lookup features, and allow you to have a better understanding how Lotus Notes 7.0.2 resolves the names and addresses when you hit that Send button. This in turn will allow you to avoid embarrassing mistakes when the e-mail message that you just composed and sent ends up in the wrong mailbox. Before we go any further, let's examine the similarities and differences between the Type-ahead and Name Lookup. Recipi

We're having problems where users are getting the "Ambiguous Name" dialog and selecting the wrong name in a custom Notes application we are developing. Is there any way to have the type ahead feature only search for names in the "PUBLIC" database for the custom application but keep the default search scope the same everywhere else? database lotus-notes lotus-domino lotusscript share|improve this question edited Oct 25 '12 at 14:16 asked Oct 25 '12 at 13:34 James Hush 1941319 this question belongs on ServerFault since it is related to Notes administration. I'm voting to move it there. –Ken Pespisa Oct 25 '12 at 13:54 Is it a server issue? We only want the lookup to happen in a specific custom notes application, not everywhere. –James Hush Oct 25 '12 at 13:57 Ok, that's fine. Just reword your question to make it clear this is for a custom application. –Ken Pespisa Oct 25 '12 at 14:12 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote I don't know of a way to turn that feature off for a particular application, but if you want to display a drop-down list of users to choose from, the @NameLookup formula can help: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/domhelp/v8r0/index.j
