This prevents Notes from launching on the next attempt with the following error message: "An error was encountered while opening a window." This error occurs far more frequently if you quit or exit Notes prematurely or abnormally. Cause The Notes code is consistently unloading nnotesmm.exe. Ntaskldr.exe should unload as expected although it may stay loaded if Notes has crashed. Answer The issue involving the unloading of nnotesmm.exe was reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# HNAA6E89C5 and was addressed in Notes/Domino 6.5.6. If the ntaskldr.exe is not unloaded as expected, use the operating system's Task Manager to end the process (press CTRL+ALT+DEL --> Task Manager --> select ntaskldr.exe --> End Process --> close Task Manager). Fix details: SPR# HNAA6E89C5 Refer to the Upgrade Central site for details on upgrading Notes/Domino. If you haven't yet upgraded and experience this situation, contact Product Support to see if a hotfix is available for your particular configuration. **************************************** NOTE: Occasionally, anti-virus software monitors database access by using NSF_HOOKS or EXT_MGR. Usually, these process are launched as Windows Services so when these processes hold memory, you cannot launch the Notes client even if you log out of your Windows account. You must restart the operating system or service application using the net stop/net start command or services.msc. Background Nnotesmm.exe monitors shared memory usage (the number of OSInitRefCount) so that unaccessed shared memory is not released by the operating system. Premature shutdown sometimes fails to decrease the counter so nnotesmm.exe falls into an infinite loop which causes the error above. "An error occurred while opening a window" errors in Lotus Notes Published 21/07/2008 By Aleksander Nordgarden-Rødner Many users of Lotus Notes, myself included, at times get the http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21224056 error message "An Error Occurred While Opening a Window". To resolve this, all processes that belongs to Lotus Notes have to be terminated. From IBM, there's a file https://www.razumny.no/2008/07/resolving-an-error-occurred-while-opening-a-window-errors-in-lotus-notes/ available called "Killnotes.exe", which does just that. The file can be obtained from Lotus.com. Simply unzip and run the file, to terminate all the processes. You should then be able to start Notes without a hitch. kinds of error messages hindering your work. Database Corruption and internal settings are the main reasons which result in the origination of various kinds of error messages in Lotus Notes application. To cope up http://lotus-notes-recovery.blogspot.com/2010/12/resolving-lotus-notes-error-message.html with such errors Lotus Notes users can use different tools like Fixup, Compact, update and NT Check Disk utilities for their removal. But sometimes even after using these tools, some exceptions may occur which can result http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/46dom.nsf/869c7412fe5d56b7852569fa007826e3/69bf8ac5099f1e5285256d3400601924?OpenDocument in obtaining poor results. Therefore in order to get proper results, a suitable Lotus Notes Recovery software is required which can Recover Lotus Notes database with great efficiency. To illustrate above problem consider the following lotus notes example. When you try to open a window in Lotus Notes application an error message appears on the screen. On every attempt while opening a window in Lotus Notes database, you will receive same error message: "An Error Occurred While Opening a Window." After getting the above error message, you will not be able to open a window in Lotus Notes application. Cause: The main reason for the occurrence of lotus notes an this error message is that there are still some processes which are running in the background and cannot be started twice. Resolution: To resolve the above error message, following steps need to be taken into account: (1) First in the start menu select "Run". (2) Now type the following command & press "Enter" using Lotus Notes file "Killnotes.exe". The command is as follows:- c:\program files\lotus\notes\nsd.exe -kill. "Killnotes.exe" file will kill all the processes occurring in the Lotus Notes database. (3) Now launch Lotus Notes. However if the above method doesn't solve your problem & Lotus Notes application continually behaves abnormally, then you must go for a third party Lotus Notes Recovery Tool. The software can easily Repair Lotus Notes database and enables you to access your mail-objects, such as messages, contacts, appointments, attachments, tasks, and journals etc. There are many softwares available in the market that are designed specifically for an efficient Lotus Notes Repair. Stellar Phoenix Lotus Notes Recovery v2.0 is one such software. I found the resolution (at least in my case) in an old article in LDD Today called "Tips for using OLE in Notes" (thanks, Kathryn O'Reilly, for mentioning this in the forum) and wanted to post it in hopes that it would help someone else. According to the article-- Can you have multiple versions of Notes installed and still use OLE? Technically, you should be able to use basic OLE features, such as embedding objects into Notes, when you have multiple versions of Notes installed. However, when some applications are embedded into Notes, they check for Notes in order to support NotesFX or OLE links. These applications may generate errors if they find an older version of Notes installed. The Windows registry can only register one version of any software program, so the last version of Notes installed takes precedence over the previous version installed. Given this issue, we highly recommend that if you plan to use OLE with Notes, you only have one version of Notes installed. In my case, this was exactly what was going on. I had installed Notes 6 in a separate directory so that I could run it as well as R5. That's when the problems with embedded objects started. I found that I could activate the object in the R5 client in the first document but not in the others. What would happen in the other documents when I tried to open the object is that the R5 client would hang with an hourglass and then eventually produce the messagebox, "An error has occurred while processing a request on an object." The embedded object was a 1-2-3 file and I found that I couldn't start the 1-2-3 application from Windows after this (an hourglass would appear for a few seconds and then 1-2-
