This prevents Notes from launching on the next attempt with the following error message: "An error was encountered while opening a window." This error occurs far more frequently if you quit or exit Notes prematurely or abnormally. Cause The Notes code is consistently unloading nnotesmm.exe. Ntaskldr.exe should unload as expected although it may stay loaded if Notes has crashed. Answer The issue involving the unloading of nnotesmm.exe was reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# HNAA6E89C5 and was addressed in Notes/Domino 6.5.6. If the ntaskldr.exe is not unloaded as expected, use the operating system's Task Manager to end the process (press CTRL+ALT+DEL --> Task Manager --> select ntaskldr.exe --> End Process --> close Task Manager). Fix details: SPR# HNAA6E89C5 Refer to the Upgrade Central site for details on upgrading Notes/Domino. If you haven't yet upgraded and experience this situation, contact Product Support to see if a hotfix is available for your particular configuration. **************************************** NOTE: Occasionally, anti-virus software monitors database access by using NSF_HOOKS or EXT_MGR. Usually, these process are launched as Windows Services so when these processes hold memory, you cannot launch the Notes client even if you log out of your Windows account. You must restart the operating system or service application using the net stop/net start command or services.msc. Background Nnotesmm.exe monitors shared memory usage (the number of OSInitRefCount) so
"An error occurred while opening a window" errors in Lotus Notes Published 21/07/2008 By Aleksander Nordgarden-Rødner Many users of Lotus Notes, myself included, at times get the http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21224056 error message "An Error Occurred While Opening a Window". To resolve this, all processes that belongs to Lotus Notes have to be terminated. From IBM, there's a file https://www.razumny.no/2008/07/resolving-an-error-occurred-while-opening-a-window-errors-in-lotus-notes/ available called "Killnotes.exe", which does just that. The file can be obtained from Lotus.com. Simply unzip and run the file, to terminate all the processes. You should then be able to start Notes without a hitch. a window Synopsis When I exit notes and then run notes again, I get the following message: "An error was encountered while opening a window" and then Notes crashes. A reboot generally fixes the problem, but it seems as though http://www.codestore.net/errors.nsf/all/55A66EE5C5510C1086256F1E004A382F?OpenDocument a process isn't terminating properly and there's state information being kept in a file somewhere. http://recover-email.blogspot.com/2014/08/how-to-fix-lotus-notes-error-message.html Suggested Causes and Solutions: Solutions I solved the problem by removing all *.nsf files and dsk;ndk files. Didn't have the time to check which one of them causing the problem.David Engqvist on 10/05/2004 07:39 At command prompt run "nsd -kill" from within the notes directory.Tommy Sellers on 10/13/2004 09:47 If notes crashes, goto taskmanager and end notes application, and then goto lotus notes processes and end tskldr.exe and restart notes.Ed Delaney on 10/22/2004 22:23 If notes crashes, goto task manager and end the Lotus Notes application and then goto processes tab and highlite ntaskldr.exe and end the process and then reopen Lotus Notes.Ed Delaney on 10/22/2004 22:31 I had Notes Minder running when Notes caused this error. I terminated Minder, ntaskldr.exe, and was able to restart Notes.Bill on 01/18/2005 09:27 All good suggestions. We've also built our own lotus notes an "Notes Restart", since even NTaskldr, which is supposed to track Notes client crashes, sometimes fails. We just make a list of all EXEs in the Notes folder & try to kill them, then restart Notes. However, I came into this thread looking for something slightly different (same error though). We had the same error in our environment but only when some users started Notes. Ended up being user error. We had put an icon in the Quick Launch bar. Since those are single-click icons, users get confused & double click. If you time it slow enough, the second click really counts & tries to start a second Notes instance, which we all know won't happen. Same might happen if there's desktop icon that's set to react on single click.Volker on 02/02/2005 13:13 OK..Volker - wrong. Period.sd - typical windows/intel BOFH response.Ed Delaney - what planet is he from ?Tommy Sellers - absolutely correct.Engqvist - you gotta be kidding me. If he's not kidding, his advice isn't wrong, it's dangerous.Umm no on 02/02/2005 21:31 I deleted 2 process through task manager. NTASKLDR and NSL.stanh on 02/04/2005 07:23 Hi everyone!I am running a program called ClientSync in an effort to get Notes (6.0.3) to run on Citrix (Metaframe XP Pres Server 1.0, on Win2003). While Opening a Window" Home » Fix Lotus Notes error message » How to Fix Lotus Notes error message "An Error Occurred While Opening a Window" To err is human, but at times software applications can render errors to. And regular computer users can understand this pain well. One or the other app shows an error message once in a while, no matter which operating system you are working on. Today we are going to talk about one such application, which is the IBM Lotus Notes. While working on IBM Lotus Notes app is otherwise smooth, there are certain error messages which appear on your screen once in a while, and thus hinder your work. Among several other reasons, mostly either the internal settings or database corruption is held responsible for these error notifications. Tools like Fixup, NT Check Disk Utilities, Update and Compact prove helpful in dealing with these errors. But exceptions always prevail. Even after using these tools some errors don't go away, which results in poor productivity. In order to tackle such issues and ensure proper results, one needs to use a Lotus Notes Recovery Software. This software helps in efficient recovery of Lotus Notes database. To further understand the aforementioned problem, let's consider the example below: You run the Lotus Notes application. It opens successfully. However, when you try to open a new window within the application, an error message shows up. On every attempt the following message shows up: "An Error Occurred While Opening a Window." This message prevents you from opening a window in Lotus Notes application. Cause of the error: The primary cause due to which this message shows up is that some processes are still running the background and thus starting them all over again is not possible. Resolution: Don't worry! The above problem can be resolved. All you need to do is to perform the following steps: (1) Got to the ‘Start' menu and select ‘Run'. (2) In the Run box, type this command: c:\program files\lotus\notes\nsd.exe -kill Hit "Enter". The "Killnotes.exe" file will kill all the background processes which are running in the Lotus Notes database. (3) Now launch the Lotus Notes application. There might be a chance that the above method fails to resolve the error and the Lotus Notes application continues to display the same error message. In this situation, you'll have to use a third party recovery tool. This tool will not only repair Lotus Notes but will also let you access mail-objects like contacts, messages, attachments, appointments, journals and tasks.
