Lotus Notes Attachment Icon Error
and Replied To Attachment shows as Gray Icon to the Recipient; sent folder; gray icon; generic lotus notes attachment icon wrong icon; blank icon. Technote (FAQ) Question A user sends a message lotus notes attachment settings with an attachment in Lotus Notes to another Lotus Notes user. The recipient sees a gray, generic, or blank icon for the attachment, and finds that there is no attachment. The Inbox view does not show the paperclip icon, and the attachment properties indicates 0 KB file size. The sender will also see the same issue if they saved a copy of the document. Answer When an attachment is forwarded, the attachment data is stored in the system's Temp folder. When the new memo form is opened, the attachment data is then copied from the Temp folder and into the new memo for forwarding. When this issue is observed, the issue is typically relative to the Temp folder. Sometimes the attachment data cannot be stored in the system Temp folder for numerous reasons, among them: 1) The folder does not get cleared after previous attachments have been created. 2) The user does not have the rights to the folder. 3) The OS has a lock on the folder because another application is using it as well. Workaround: Exit Notes, and then delete the folder "C.Program Files.lotus.notes.data" and/or the "C.Lotus.Notes.Data" folder from the system Temp folder. Then, the user should be able to forward attachments without issue. Note: If the system Temp folder does not contain either of the noted folders, then remove folders which start with the text "notes" followed by a letter and number combination (for example, notesDB0589). Additionally, you may want to delete any individual files from the directory which have dates previous than the current date. The Temp directory is often: C:\Documents and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\ Local Settings\Temp folder where %USERPROFILE% may be

System: Dell Latitude D630, XPSP3 I cannot drag files to an email message without getting an hourglass (does not attach) but allows me to use notes as if nothing happens. I can even shut down notes http://superuser.com/questions/462407/lotus-notes-8-5-2-cannot-attach (with 2 processes that do not shut down in the background and have to use killnotes). I cannot attach a file either, it either gives me an error note/reporting screen and shuts down. What I have tried: Reinstalling, deleting/renaming cache.ndk, deleting/renaming desktop. file, deleting the %temp% file. None of these have fixed the issue. Any other ideas? lotus-notes attachments share|improve this question edited Aug 17 '12 at 18:14 dsolimano 2,32221230 asked Aug 16 '12 at 13:54 Jason 62 Can you attach files to email messages by locating your cursor in the message body and selecting Attach from the File menu? –rhsatrhs Aug 16 '12 at 15:17 Thanks for the reply, tried that. Reacts the same way as when I click the paperclip icon, just sends up the Lotus Notes box "an error has occurred" then sends error report. Doesn't usually show that box when I drag and drop, just hourglasses infinitely, but can still use notes. (I can even shutdown, etc. but still need to run killnotes to kill leftover processes dealing with attachment) –Jason Aug 16 '12 at 15:59 Is an NSD file created in the IBM_Technical_Support folder (inside the Notes\Data folder)? &nd
the time, I pushed IBM for a solution and they eventually produced a half-solution (slightly better but no cigar).Since then we've been living in pain.Recently a commenter named "CIS" left a note http://dominogavin.blogspot.com/2011/01/resolving-lotus-notes-851-and-higher.html on my original post to try putting AttachmentsUseCaption=0 in the notes.ini. It worked **THANKS** - you're my hero of the hour!I decided to describe the problem and solution here in case others were in the same boat. Here's how our attachments used to look prior to using the Lotus Notes 8.5.1 (and higher) clients. At 8.5.1, the text under the attachments disappeared completely. This left me with a screen with two PDF lotus notes files and no description. Not a good look for our extranet service. We halted our Notes 8.5.1 rollout until IBM provided a fix but when they did, it wasn't a particularly elegant one. Here's how it looked; The attachment text (file names) stopped being under the icon and started being to the right of the icon. It might have been ok, if IBM didn't still keep invisible spacing under the icon.It lotus notes attachment probably would have looked great if I could just left align the icons but it was not to be.When the problem was still present in Lotus Notes 8.5.2, I decided to start upgrading our clients. I wasn't happy with the fix but at least we had descriptions for our attachments again.A couple of days ago, following Cis' advice, I edited my NOTES.INI file;C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Notes.ini The location may vary for you - especially if you're using the Multi-user install. I opened the file in Notepad and added the line somewhere near the top.AttachmentsUseCaption=0Then I restarted the Notes client and detached and reattached a file. The result looked like this. (File No 1.)Yay!! We've since added the line to our policies, so all our clients will get it when they reboot. Now all we have to do is detach and reattach everything we've done since November 2009 - Thanks IBM, at least now nobody can say they've got nothing to do.
