SPF RECORD(#5.7.1); Sender Policy Framework Technote (troubleshooting) Problem Lotus Notes email users receive a Delivery mxtoolbox Failure report reporting the following message: "Error transferring to xxx.xxx.com; SMTP Protocol Returned a Permanent Error 550 Bad SPF RECORD(#5.7.1)" Symptom Delivery Failure Report received in the Lotus Notes inbox. Email is being rejected by the recipient's domain (example: acme.com) because the sender cannot be verified. Cause The Sender Policy Framework (SPF) is an open standard specifying a technical method to prevent sender address forgery. The current version of SPF, SPFv1 or SPF Classic, protects the envelope sender address, which is used for the delivery of messages. The email recipient must configure Sender Policy Framework in her DNS. In this scenario, an SPF record has not been established for the sender's domain. Thus, the mail is being rejected by the recipient's domain because the sender cannot be verified. Resolving the problem To resolve the issue, create an SPF for the sender's domain. For more information on this topic, read www.openspf.org. This site also allows the user to establish an SPF record. Suddenly, at about midday, the Notes server stopped sending outgoing email messages to the Email Security device and started reporting this error: Error transferring to 192.168.100.253; SMTP Protocol Returned a Permanent Error 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for ..., It says it cannot relay for any recipient email addresses. Nothing was changed on the http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/discussions/lotus-notes-smtp-protocol-returned-a-permanent-error-550-571-unable-to/ server or the Email Security device but this suddenly started occurring. All the outgoing messages are being held in the mail.box file and aren't being delivered. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to resolve it?
