(particularly during peak hours) Notes clients might experience either a slow response from the server lotus notes problems and solutions or no response from the server (and receive the error "The server is not responding"). When this behavior is happening, users are able to connect to the server through HTTP. Symptom On Solaris, when this behavior is occurring you may notice a quick increase in the tcpListenDrop network statistic. This variable indicates the TCP connection is dropping after the https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSKTMJ_8.0.1/com.ibm.help.domino.admin.doc/DOC/H_TROUBLESHOOTING_THE_ERROR_SERVER_NOT_RESPONDING_898_STEPS.html TCP handshake completes because the kernel driver for the Domino application TCP listening queue is full. The default TCP queue length for Domino server connection port 1352 (NRPC) is 20, which can be overwhelmed during peak loading. From netstat -s or the NSD log network statistics section, look for a large number of tcpListenDrop (see example below) tcpListenDrop =3285788 tcpListenDropQ0 = 0 NOTE: We do not have http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21469475 specific TCP OS values to monitor for Windows to confirm that this is the problem. Resolving the problem The Domino notes.ini TCP_QLENGTH parameter can be used to increase the TCP listening queue length, which for Solaris will be restricted by tcp_conn_req_max_q (default maximum number of pending TCP connections for a TCP listener). The maximum queue length is 1.5 of TCP_QLENGTH when creating thorough Solaris API listen() function. For Solaris, you can increase TCP_QLENGTH to 512 as a starting point to verify whether tcpListenDrop stops increasing. (This applies to Solaris only as we do not yet have a way to monitor this OS value on Windows). If needed, you can increase the value further, for example to 768, 1024, and 1536. TCP_QLENGTH requires either a Domino port restart or a full Domino restart for the changes to take effect. IMPORTANT NOTE: Increasing TCP_QLENGTH can cause large memory consumption and higher CPU utilization. As such, after doing so you should closely monitor the server. Starting in 8.5.3, the default values for TCP_QLENGTH are increased to 512 for Windows and 1024 for Solaris (SPR #FMEG8EKCS2). Additional Recommendations In addition, the following settings are recommended to be set on Solaris: tcp_recv_hiwat 65535 tcp_xmit_hiwat 65535 tcp_conn_req_max_q 4096 tcp_conn_req_max_q0 4096 To verify and change these values setting, use the Solaris ndd command, as following example for tcp
