error message Technote (troubleshooting) Problem While using a Lotus Notes database, you see an error dialog box containing the message: "Object variable not set" What does this error mean, and what can you do about it? Cause This error message indicates an error has occurred in some LotusScript. The LotusScript code is trying to use an "object variable", but it has not been set to a value. Resolving the problem As an end user, you usually cannot resolve an error of this type. You should report the error to the developer of the database. As a developer, you should turn on the LotusScript debugger and follow the steps to re-create the error. At the http://searchdomino.techtarget.com/answer/User-getting-Variable-not-declared-error-when-Notes-65-launches point that the error occurs, the debugger will stop at the line causing the error, and the Variables tab in the debugger will help you identify the object variable which has not been set. If it is not possible to debug the code, use the On Error statement to trap the error and display the error line number. Read about On Error in the Domino Designer help. Once you have identified the error line number, you can http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21297108 generally find the problem by looking for the word preceding the "." For instance, in the following statement: Set doc = view.GetDocumentByKey(keys(0)) the problem is that the variable view has the value Nothing. The coding error that caused the problem is not on this line; it is that you failed to assign or check the value of the variable before you go to this line. Perhaps the variable was never assigned, or you have misspelled the name here or elsewhere, or perhaps it has been assigned with the value Nothing. Suppose the variable was earlier assigned with the statement: Set view = db.GetView("lkByDocID") and there is no view named lkByDocID. There is no error on this line, but the variable view is assigned the value Nothing. Later, you have an error when you are using the variable view for an object reference operation. To avoid having this problem: Use Option Declare in all your scripts. This will catch any misspellings of variable names during compile, saving much time. Use Is Nothing to test whether the object variable has a useful value before you try to use it. Use On Error to trap the error and take corrective action (or at least print a more specific error message). Pay attention to where object variables are deleted and think about what other objects might depend on them. With respect to this last point,
