XXXXXXXA; STARTTLS; SMTP; tls; ssl Technote (troubleshooting) http://recover-email.blogspot.com/2013/12/how-to-solve-exchange-smtp-server-error.html Problem Error transferring message ... 530 #5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. Cause With SMTPClientDebug=1 enabled on the Domino server, the SMTP conversation to a receiving server which required TLS showed lotus notes this error. The initial EHLO response from this server contained an unrecognized item: SMTPClient: ReceiveResponse: 250 XXXXXXXA . Resolving the problem The response shown is due to firewall filtering and is not a valid response that Domino recognizes. It is lotus notes smtp believed that this response was actually the 250-STARTTLS response from the receiving server masked by the firewall due to a feature named "inspect esmtp" enabled on the firewall. As Domino did not receive the 250-STARTTLS response back indicating the capability of the receiving server to use TLS, it negotiated back to standard SMTP which the receiving server would not accept.
