I still had msi error 2769 install problems but hopefully I have fixed them now. The original symptoms:Opening itunes or accessing qtime error 2769 custom action media online generates a dialog stating that my quicktime software is out of date. There are two options, Cancel or Download.Scenario 1: I custom action install did not close 1 msihandles click Download - msi engine, msiexec, runs constantly and never finishes. Scenario 2: I click cancel and itunes exits. msiexec is still locked in background. Have to kill task.So I do the good thing and try to clean up leaked msihandle the mess. I download and install Windows Installer Cleaner, remove quicktime and clean up according directions I have found here online. I download quicktime again and try to install again. Near the end of the install I get the same error. So I clean up again and think ... what did I miss. Ahh, IE7 has a hook to the dll files and even though I restarted the machine before install and disabled Antivirus the hook I believe was

screwing me. So I open IE7, click on tools, manage addons. Under Show drop down select the tools currently used by IE. Look for all things QuickTime and disable. I then uninstall the failed previous install - uninstall worked for me. I then enabled msi logging in the registry so that I have a record of the install this time. The install is not 100% smooth, but it completes at least. That is a first for some time. I still got the prompt to update when the setup was nearly complete. When I looked at the MSI log I saw several errors relating to generating a hash for some sample movie. MSI (c) (0C:8C) [18:45:09:828]: Failed to generate hash for file 'D:\Program Files\QuickTime\Sample.mov'. Error: 0x3MSI (c) (0C:8C) [18:45:09:828]: Failed to generate hash for file 'D:\Program Files\QuickTime\Sample.qtif'. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2769. The arguments are: MoveQuickTimeMPEG2, 1, Action ended 18:45:16: MoveQuickTimeMPEG2. Return value 1.Now I believe this error from the log is harmless, and not related to the problem but I am including it just in case I am wrong. Just search for QuickTime.MSI. The arguments are: AddDesktopShortcuts, 1", disregard. (Above Entry Provided on 8/11/2008 by sabbat) ----------------------- Sabbat's instructions above worked for me, except they didn't get rid of the tray icon. In order to remove it, remove the qttask.exe line from the Component, FeatureComponents, and File tables when building your transform. Above Entry Provided on 8/18/2008 by elmiko ------------------------- I followed sabbats notes to the T and it got me very close. Elmikos suggestions got me a little closer. I am using Orca so I searched for any row with QTTask.exe and dropped it this removed QTTask and that got me a clean install msi. I get a 2869 error when I attach this action in the Install phase of the Install Execution sequence. The Installer Action is currently part of a Visual Studio setup project and works fine from there. It overrides Before quicktime error code Install, After Install, Before Rollback, Commit, Before Uninstall events of the Installer class. The "Before Install" event will pop-up a Windows form to take some input and progresses further based on the input.Thinking if this error could be because of this Windows Form, I tried running it with another Installer derived class (the parent class for the above one and provided by Microsoft). Same error came up even with that.I need to run this Custom Action library (which is part of Microsoft's GAX runtime) to be able to run my software post installation. Am I missing something here? Appreciate any help in making this work.Code: Select allMSI (s) (F8:B4) [13:29:17:362]: Executing op: ActionStart(Name=dotNetCustAct.dll,,)
