Join Now Last year DYN.COM changed https://support.software.dell.com/kb/sw11246 their cert for doing the Dynamic DNS registrations. This caused a lot of SonicWALL users difficulty since the cert is not able to be updated in the SonicWALL except by way of a firmware update. Dyn put the not yet expired old cert back in place allowing all of us to keep registering. Well, it turns out the cert is now fully expired. Thankfully, if https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/319695-dyndns-dyn-com-stopped-working-on-my-tz-sonicwalls-recently your TZ or NSA SonicWALL can run 5.8.1.11 or newer you are in good shape. My NSA3500, plethora of TZ100's and 200's are updateable to that firmware and I have verified that it fixes the issue. Unfortunately the TZ105 is not updateable. they are still on 5.8.1.10 so they do not have a fix out in any form to help those work with Dyn. I have talked with their chat and phone support and have been told that there is not a update that I can get nor is there a time table for when one will be available. This will likely affect other SonicWALLs besides the 105 but I dont have any information on them. Short and Sweet: 5.8.1.11+ --> Dyn.com will work just fine. 5.x that is older than 5.8.1.11 --> Will no longer be able to update dyn.com. I do hope this saves someone the time and frustration of going through their overseas outsourced support. Hopefully we will see a update for those models that do not have the correct 5.x firmware soon. getting a certificate for mkoko.dyndns.org. The question is more, should you be allowed to get a certificate for these domains? I think the answer should be yes, but I'll leave that up to the LE support to answer. eva2000 2015-09-13 03:00:16 UTC #3 that's an interesting question as for subdomains vs domains in this case - proof of ownership of subdomain doesn't necessarily mean ownership of the main domain name. schoen 2015-09-13 22:10:56 UTC #4 As of now, I don't know a reason why someone wouldn't be able to get a certificate for one of these names. sourcejedi 2015-09-24 10:24:48 UTC #5 The usual providers don't support this :(. I think it's because it's much less clear what the policies are for a delegated sub-domain. The obvious difference is that "normal" domains are registered in WHOIS database(s), including an expiry date. I wouldn't just assume letsencrypt can do better. "Subdomain-only SSL security/availability" "Implenting an SSL certificate for DynDns" The other "interesting" thing about sub-domains is the HTTP security model. DynDNS (no longer free) got their domains onto the Public Suffix List. The only other provider that did so was DuckDNS, because I asked them about it :). If letsencrypt was able to run (or partner with) a DNS sub-domain service as well, that would be great. It's another lot of work though. If you look at DuckDNS's support (Google+), they're constantly taking down malware domains. rugk 2015-10-17 14:03:17 UTC #6 sourcejedi: The usual providers don't support this :(. But Let's Encrypt supports this. So you don't have to care about your DynDNS service. BTW if you'd like to get a DynDNS service which also offers DNSSEC and DANE you can use https://desec.io. Reciprocate 2015-10-19 21:16:31 UTC #7 We've used a paid dyndns account "forever" - but were never able to secure a certificate. I only recently learned certificates were now available (cough, cough) - if we were willing to hand over $60/yr (?). Now I understand it costs money to maintain infrastructure....but a lot of this stuff looks like "nice work if you can get it". Perpetual annuities are just ill suited for a decentralized internet. Unfortunately, my client certificate efforts have come to naught for now https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1049176 It's really, really, difficult for mere mortals to sort these things out.
