So I had a VM running ubuntu server 13.10 that I recently upgraded 14.04 LTS. After the upgrade, it appeared that I was unable to ssh into the machine. Login via the local console was fine, and ssh out was okay. After some fiddling, I discovered that ssh only fails for one particular username. Using a second username proved successful. I have tried multiple ssh clients and each time I receive the same error for that one user: Software caused connection abort. Now, from what I gather this comes from Windows itself, so I ask you, what possible reasons for this could there be? PuTTY logs show the public key authentication succeeding, and then suddenly for no apparent reason, disconnecting: Event Log: Access granted Outgoing packet #0x8, type 90 / 0x5a (SSH2_MSG_CHANNEL_OPEN) ... Outgoing raw data ... Event Log: Network error: Software caused connection abort I've tried this with multiple ssh clients, from multiple Windows machines, across three different sites, and the result is always the same. What seemed to be the problem was that my IP Address was being blocked, given that I had too many failed login attempts. After requesting the IP http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/283166/putty-ssh-tracert-network-error-software-caused-connection-abort to be unblocked and waiting a little bit the problem was solved. If the godaddy representative that attended the call is reading this THANK YOU DUDE! I have a godaddy account (shared hosting), and it comes with the ability to use the linux terminal via SSH Access. When I first obtained PuTTy, everything was working fine, however I tried to login 10 (more or less) different times with the wrong Username and Password, and now every time I click Open in PuTTy, I get the black terminal page but with this popup error message: Network error: Software caused connection abort Here is the actual image: http://i.imgur.com/E9cQB3M.png I don't even have the option to type anything in the black terminal anymore and no writing appears inside the terminal, as if it were frozen. I contacted Godaddy (great service btw) and we did the following tests: Downloaded putty on my other laptop, got same error when attempting connection Godaddy managed to log in themselves via SSH and managed without a problem I constantly used the "enable" option in godaddys CPanel under SSH Access, so that was not the problem The final test we did was I entered my cmd.exe and ran the following command: tracert 108.blah.blah.blah 108.blah.blah.blah re

March 1, 2015 16.3k views I want to use PuTTY with username and password instead of ssh keys. I edited network error /etc/ssh/sshd_config and uncommented '#PasswordAuthentication yes ' Then I restarted ssh with 'service ssh restart' But, when I try and use PuTTY to log into server PuTTY does not connect and gives the "Network error: Software caused connection abort" message. What am I screwing up? 1 comment 1 sierracircle March 1, 2015 does putty have a way to add options? Like: ssh -v youruser@yourdomain.com adding the -v will give you some more output network error software which can help figure out what is going on. Also, be sure to check permissions on your .ssh folder for your user: chmod go-wrx ~ chmod 700 ~/.ssh chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys Log In to Comment Leave a Comment Add comments here to get more clarity or context around a question. If you have a password and shell set for your user you will be able to log in there as it does not depend on your ssh service. I would then recommend checking /var/log/auth.log and the other log files in /var/log for your ssh login attempts and you should find more information on why they failed. I have tried both user/pass and public/private key. I get the same "Network error: Software caused connection abort". *I am using Windows 10 Reply Log In to Comment Have another answer?
