Friday, January 21, 2011 Fix SQL-Server 2008 R2 "network error occurred" SQLNCLI file x64 I was just installing SQL-Server 2008R2 Management Studio (SSMS) Client Tools and SQLNCLI 10.5 on a Windows-7 Professional x64 (64-bit) machine when I ran into a very uninformative, or clearly misleading, error message during the install procedure that stated (something close to this): Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup: The following error has occurred: A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file: [install-device-name--and-root-of-path-here]\x64\setup\x64\sqlncli[1].msiSince I was installing from an ISO image that I had just used to successfully do a *test* install into a VMware ESXi VM (Windows 2008 Server R2) prior to the real install on a physical machine, I instantly thought: "what the heck? bad image suddenly?... unlikely... network issues?... unlikely, as I have not had any others." Something was off. I wondered if there was an issue with the installer not liking the fact I was trying to install from an ISO that I had "mounted" as a virtual CDROM via UltraISO for this. So, I used 7-ZIP to explode the ISO into an install directory on my same server, and tried to install directly from this completely unpacked set of files. The error persisted! Still getting that "The following error has occurred: A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file... SQLNCLI...". Hmmm... odd. And, annoying, as OBVIOUSLY THIS IS/WAS NOT A NETWORKING ERROR as the message describes! (thank you Microsoft! NOT!). The cause of the error...I wondered what was different between my clean test-VM and my server that I was now attempting to install SQL-SERVER 2008 R2 Client Tools and SSMS onto. Both were 64-Bit OS's and same setup, etc., but one was a clean VM. This got me thinking... I had PREVIOUSLY installed JUST the SQLNCLI (SQL-Server Native Client) for SQL 2008 R2 onto my physical system, in order to test application connectivity to a SQL2008R2 database. So, could that be it!? YES! After uninstalling any previously installed SQLNCLI applications,

Can anyone please explain to me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Andrew Wednesday, September 08, 2010 3:48 PM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in to vote Okay, finally success. It turns out that Sql Server 2008 Express did not install with Sql https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/c452aa19-7d1d-4046-8fae-44b6c4b61b09/instal-management-studio-a-network-error-occurred?forum=sqlexpress Server Manaagement Studio 2008 Express, contrary to what I thought would happen. After downloading Sql Server 2008 Express, the instance is up and running automatically. I'm still a little bit disappointed on how poorly these procedures are documented. I even uninstalled the SQL Server Native Client, and I think that might be what's causing the problem. So by uninstalling all previous versions, are you referring to the following programs that show up in Control Panel > Uninstall? Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package ‘sqlncli_x64.msi'." as shown below. After that, the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup Progress will display some errors with a status "Setup Failed. Refer to the Setup log for details".When trying to install the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client Setup by hand it displays a similar error message that the file ‘sqlcli_x64.msi' cannot be found. It's unable to locate thesqlcli_x64.msi ( 64 bit version of SQL Server Native client). It's puzzling, I am trying to install with 64 Bit version of SQL Server 2005 and it's unable to locate thesqlcli_x64.msi, crazy thing is file is already available in installation folder and it's showing me that error strange???.After so much of trial I found solution for this problem is that someone started the installation with a wrong edition (32 vs. 64) edition and left the components there.Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the existing SQL 2005 components, and then reinstall.Voila!!! It works fine.. It's puzzling why the error comes up, but it is resolved afterre-installation. Erwin Solution for SQL Server 2012:In [installation path]\1033_ENU_LP\x64\Setup\x64\SQLNCLIX.msi (where [installatiopn path is the path that is automatically generated on installation) rename the SQLNCLIX.msi file to SQLNCLIX64-2012-EN-300.msi (notice the small letters in extensions). Then reinstall without problems. Greg Cecil Thanks for the tip off… I had the same issue going from x64 SQL 2008R2 Dev Edition to x64 SQL 2014. The message was about not finding sqlncli_x64.msi for SQL 2012.An app I'd installed had installed 2012 LocalDB and the 2012 Native client. I guess it was a 32bit version. T
