Putty Network Error Connection Timed Out
putty: network error permission denied Windows Server > Security Question 0 putty download Sign in to vote Hello, I posted this here and they send me to your TechNet forum. Because i misread the topic i also posted it here and the owner suggested i post it under Windows Server Forums > Security . I hope i finally http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/putty-network-error-permission-denied/e71987c1-5a45-4e7f-8566-6d331dc4c563 am in the right place. I use windows 7 home premium x64 and want to connect to a linux server through a vpn tunnel with Putty (SSH). I set Windows Firewall to block all outbound traffic by default and allow only those which are in my rulelist to pass through. I allow putty to connect inbound and https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4e5efb21-2fdf-4b4e-b109-61e6608ab808/putty-network-error-permission-denied?forum=winserversecurity outbound but i get the message "fatal error ->network error: permission denied". It seems that the Windows Firewall is blocking putty even when i set it to allow. I found a thread a Vista forum here with the same issue. The support didnt answer, but the user figured the port which is part of the problem. He opened for TCP on port 22 for all outgoing applications. This works, but doesnt fullfill my security policy. Which application (other than putty) do i need to allow TCP outgoing on port 22 to avoid this error? PS: I have set my FW to tell me when it is blocking an application and i dont get any messages even when it blocks. I get only the error message from putty and have to guess that its my firewall blocking. B) Is there a tool/buildt in function that allows me to check what gets blocked? B1) Can i set my system to log attempts of outgoing traffic? Edited by Fusch Thursday,

These user ids are just normal users that belong to a developer group. Originally, I used 0.61 version. After reading other threads on this site, I upgraded to 0.62, but the problem continues. I use CentOS 5 server. You may have the urge to comment error permission denied that I would have entered bad password, but trust me I have tried the login after changing the password several times, as I have no problem to login as root through the same putty window. Below is the event log from the putty window. Can your client send data to the server's port? (Try telnet servername 22 or netcat servername 22 and look for SSH-2.0-... banner message.) Try the 'real' ssh client program, run it with the ssh -v servername -v command line option to dump debugging messages, you might find why putty can't connect that way. –sarnold Oct 2 '11 at 23:26 1 Rilindo you are absolutely right!!! –user952543 Oct 3 '11 at 2:01 | show 1 more comment 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted Putty has GSSAPI enabled by default. Turn it off if you are not using Kerberos (and chances are, you are not in your environment). Explanation: I dealt with a few weeks back with when a new administrator could not login to any ssh host with putty - even the one that I know should be working for him. It seems that with GSSAPI Auth enabled, Putty will attempt to login with non-existent kerberos credentials, which resulted in an immediate Access Denied message: By way of comparison, here is me trying to login to a host that has the DenyUsers directive enabled (and without GSSAPI Auth enabled): share|improve this answer edited Oct 3 '11 at 2:49 answered Oct 3 '11 at 1:20 Rilindo 4,505
