We do not attempt to list all error messages here: there are many which should never occur, and some which should be self-explanatory. If you get an error message which is not listed in this chapter and which you don't understand, report it to us as a bug (see appendix B) and we will add documentation for it. 10.1 ‘The server's host key is not cached in the registry' This error message occurs when PuTTY connects to a new SSH server. Every server identifies itself by means of a host key; once PuTTY knows the host key for a server, it will be able to detect if a malicious attacker redirects your connection to another machine. If you see this message, it means that PuTTY has not seen this host key before, and has no way of knowing whether it is correct or not. You should attempt to verify the host key by other means, s

Also, be sure to check permissions on your .ssh folder for your user: chmod go-wrx ~ chmod 700 ~/.ssh chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys Log In to Comment Leave a Comment Add comments here to get more clarity or context around a question. If you have a password and shell set for your user you will be able to log in there as it does not depend on your ssh service. I would then recommend checking /var/log/auth.log and the other log files in /var/log for your ssh login attempts and you should find more information on why they failed. Problem is that I went to start setting some things up by logging into the XBMCbuntu machine via Putty/SSH, which I do all of the time and was working fine before reformatting, and I get this error in Putty Quote:"Network error: Software caused connection abort" What network error the heck? I do have an onboard LAN card which is disabled in BIOS and I am using a PCI Ethernet adapter to connect wired. It is the same setup I had before reformatting and worked just fine. So I have no idea what is going on. I can SSH into my NAS just fine using Putty, but the new install is blocking this for some reason. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated (This post was last modified: 2012-12-11 network error software 02:26 by beschmid.) find quote beschmid Senior Member Posts: 226 Joined: Mar 2008 Reputation: 2 2012-12-10 00:19 Post: #2 To clarify, I can view files on the xbmcbuntu machine from my windows pc. Nothing has changed on my end since I last came in (last week). All of the sudden I can't log into the Linux computer (and I need to) through WinSCP or Putty. Does anyone know why this is? I've searched alot, but only found answers regarding iPhones etc... Obviously I do not have Windows Firewall on, and like I said, have made no changes since I last used the computer last week. Any suggestions? Thanks! Advertisements rockinghorse2 Guest Posted: 2011-11-10 05:33 [Reply with quote] just wanted to add, when I do ifconfig on my Linux computer it shows the correct ipaddress within my network. Both of the computers are sitting right here and connected through a netgear router to the rest of our network. Also I get the same error message for both WinSCP and Putty, it comes up right away after trying to log in. rockinghorse2 Guest Posted: 2011-11-10 05:36 [Reply with quote] also, I am able to access the internet on both computers and ping both computers from one another with no loss. On a side note, does anyone know how I can edit my original post instead of posting continuous replies?
