I have two accounts: a Google Talk and a Jabber account that is linked to my Facebook chat. Whenever I open my Messages app, my connection to Google Talk works just fine, but there is always a connection error with my Facebook account. But my Internet is working fine (like, I'm able to browse to www.facebook.com just fine). It's not an account authorization problem (incorrect username/password), trust me. To fix the problem, I need to go into Preferences -> delete my Facebook Jabber account -> recreate the account -> boom, connection is working fine again. But, as soon as I log off from my Messages app (by closing it) and re-opening it, the problem re-emerges. Connection to Google Talk works fine, but a connection error with Facebook again. Perhaps this is an issue with Mountain Lion's implementation of Messages; because it is a newer app than the battle-tested iChat, there are still some rough edges needing to be sorted out. Anyone having any tips regarding this problem? most Macs only have wi-fi cards and no built-in ethernet, and so it can be incredibly frustrating to be unable to join a wi-fi network. Typically when you can't connect to a particular wi-fi router on a Mac, you'll see the error message "A connection timeout occurred" or "Failed to join network - a connection timeout occurred" either when trying to join a network or when the Mac is attempting to auto-join a wifi router and it fails. If you see that error message, you should be able http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/58624/mountain-lion-messages-facebook-jabber-connection-problem to resolve the connection timeout issue by following the steps outlined below. The troubleshooting steps covered here apply to any and all Macs using nearly any version of Mac OS X, whether it's on a MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, Air, or whatever else you're using. Note you're going to be removing wireless networking preferences as part of this sequence, which alone can reliably http://osxdaily.com/2016/05/14/fix-wifi-connection-timeout-error-mac/ resolve stubbornly problematic wi-fi issues, but as a side effect you will lose customizations to wireless settings in the process. Thus, if you set custom DNS or specific DHCP or TCP/IP settings, be prepared to make those changes again. How to Resolve Mac "Connection Timeout" Error Messages with Wi-Fi Networks Before anything else, you should reboot the wi-fi router that is having a hard time connecting. Sometimes just turning a router off and back on again is sufficient to resolve connection difficulties. Turn off wi-fi on the Mac by going to the wireless menu and choosing "Turn Wi-Fi Off" Eject and disconnect any Thunderbolt or USB drives or disk peripherals that are attached to the computer (I know this sounds weird, just do it) Next to to the Finder in Mac OS X and create a new folder, call it something like "backup Wi-Fi files" so that it's easy to identify and put it on the Desktop or another easy to access location Open a new Finder window, then hit Command+Shift+G to bring up "Go To Folder" (you can also access this from the Go menu), entering the following path: /Library/Preferences/SystemConf

How to fix this: Open iChat's Preferences. Under Accounts, select Server Settings. os x Try unchecking "Use SSL", or changing the Port to 443, or both. Try taking iChat online again. You may not need to -- if it's this problem, it should take you online os x messages immediately. Take iChat back offline, go back to Preferences, Accounts, Server Settings, and click "Use Default Settings" (which changes it back to SSL and port 5190). Try to go online again and it should work. It seems that Lion's networking is still a bit finicky under 10.7.1. (This also might be the AOL servers' fault, but probably not.) ◆ Follow Marco.org posts: Twitter, RSS feed, or the alternate RSS feed in which link posts always point here first instead of their targets.
