Remote Desktop Configuring Remote Session Then Closes
and rise to the top Remote Desktop fails with no error up vote 6 down vote favorite 2 Recently, I've been having problems connecting to a remote machine via RDP. I can connect fine exactly once, but all subsequent attempts fail until the remote machine is rebooted. I seem to authenticate properly, but the RDP logon dialog disappears after showing, "Configuring remote session..." for a few seconds. No errors remote desktop connection closes immediately or other useful info is written either to my screen or the Event Logs of the two machines involved. I've tried disabling remote sound as others have suggested, with no success. I'm still investigating a solution, but would appreciate any thoughts. Fortunately, I can reboot the box remotely w/o causing any problems, but this is a less than ideal workaround. windows-7 remote-desktop share|improve this question asked Feb 20 '12 at 21:32 Duane 4116 Have you tried closing the connection differently? Also do you have physical access to the machine and have you tried logging in locally after the RDP session? –MBraedley Feb 20 '12 at 22:05 Yes, I've tried just X-ing out of the RDP session as well as start-> disconnect. And yep, I've been able to log in locally after an unsuccessful RDP attempt. –Duane Mar 13 '12 at 23:06 When the problem occurs again - and you have some folders being shared from the remote computer also - can you please try and connect to these with the same username/password and let us know if this works or not? –Steve Rathbone Jun 14 '12 at 9:59 It might be worth trying to rdp in

When I try to connect, the remote desktop zooms through different status messages, the last of them being "Configuring remote session" and then reverts to the initial Connection dialog again without giving me any error message. The server is seems to be http://serverfault.com/questions/121225/remote-desktop-fails-without-error-message up, since it's still deliverying web pages. Also, it does seem to be accepting my credentials. Is there any way to see why the connection fails? I've browsed through my system's even logs, but could not find anything related to remote desktop. Perhaps there's some hidden troubleshooting mode? Thanks, Adrian Edit: In the meantime the server has come back online. I'm not sure if it did so on it's own or if tech support did because I have not heard from them so far, but the problem is solved for the moment. It's a bit disappointing not to know the cause of thep problem though. windows-server-2008 windows-7 remote-desktop share|improve this question edited Mar 11 '10 at 16:58 asked Mar 10 '10 at 18:30 Adrian Grigore 61811229 Quick question - are you attempting to save the connection credentials? –Mr Furious Mar 10 '10 at 20:24 Initially I was, but then I also tried without saved credentials. I also tried it from a different terminal. Always the same problem. –Adrian Grigore Mar 10 '10 at 20:52 1 Adrian - is there anything in the Event Viewer to go on? Did the reboot happen when you had planned it to, or was it more recent? –mfinni Mar 10

I get no error message. It starts the process of connecting after I type the IP Address in and hit enter. The address and other info turn grey like always... but then about 2 seconds later it stops and returns to normal. No error message provided. I can ping the server that I'm trying to reach and I can ping my laptop from the server... in fact I can RDC from that server into my laptop... but not the other way... and I really need to once I'm on the road. Anyone have any clues. It seems like it must be a setting or a service not started on one or both. The obvious ones are covered e.g. RDC permissions. I also turned off all firewalls to eliminate that risk too. Nothing works. Since the original post, I found that using TightVNC on both machines has solved the problem but would still prefer to use RDP if possible. m 0 l Related resources Cant connect using remote desktop! - Forum Remote desktop - can't connect using wireless connection - Forum Can't use Remote Desktop Connection - Forum Remote Desktop can't connect to remote desktop - Forum How to connect to wan from lan using remote desktop i.e lan to wan - Forum Can't find your answer ? Something else seems to be at play here. wrt to alternatives, fwiw, I prefer LogMeIn Free. The beauty is that you don't need to manage firewalls, ports, or even open ports at all. Its use of a rendezvous server and support of NAT traversal make all the unnecessary. And that makes your network safer since anytime you have ports open, you're subject to attacks should there be vulnerabilities w
