The server threw me an "lsass.exe" error this morning, saying that it cannot boot, with the following error. LSASS.EXE - System Error, security accounts manager initialization failed because of the following error: Directory Services cannot start. Error status 0xc00002e1. I don't get to boot screen. I can successfully boot in active directory restore mode. I'm beyond horror and panic at the moment. The system told me the user hive was corrupted, but http://serverfault.com/questions/54188/lsass-exe-error-windows-cannot-boot recuperation worked out okay, or so said the messagebox. As far as I know, there is no disaster recovery plan at all. The boss said that there MIGHT be a ghost somewhere. If I don't find any, there isn't. The question is simple. I have to improvise the best plan ever or we're all dead. What should I do, apart from trying not to panic? The system is a Windows 2003 with SiS onboard RAID support, plugged with two scsi drives in RAID 0+1. The drivers and system are up to date. There is seemingly no virus in there, though I wouldn't rule out that possibility. Security is a mess to start with. Or both. Both would be good. –MrZombie Aug 14 '09 at 12:42 Can you summarize here what lead to this condition? –nik Aug 14 '09 at 13:17 Yes I can: 3 years in a dusty closet with no air whatsoever, combined with heavy data transfer and high processor use, unattended overheat lock-ups, no backup, no disaster recovery plan, and a boss that is less than happy to let people spend time on

Now Mal-ware system error bytes indicates C:\WINDOWS\ime\lsass.exe (HackTool.Agent) -> No action taken. The server is slowing down to a point of not functioning. Can this file be repaired or replaced without restoring the system 0 Question by:wilf_thorburn Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 3 Best Solution byWes Fields At this point I would try the Windows Server 2003 Repair. The repair of course just simply overwrites all the Windows System Files. Just in case you need it. If that doesn't work I would try a windows repair with you 2003 media. I removed it, and then the server came up with a device allready exists error, and would reboot. I had to leave the error on the screen and restore the C:\WINDOWS\ime\lsass.exe file. The server then rebooted fine, but has slowed down now. 0 LVL 7 Overall: Level 7 Windows Server 2003 1 MS Legacy OS 1 Message Expert Comment by:ZShaver2012-01-06 i'm not sure if that "device already exists" error is even related but when in doubt, maybe replace lsass.exe with the one from system32? 0 Message Author Comment by:wilf_th
