I have tried to remove every single reader file, including the ones in ProgramData. But still it says reader is already installed. July 2, 2014 Facebook Twitter Pinterest Stumbleupon Whatsapp Email I couldn't run open a .PDF bank statement because it needs Adobe Reader. I used Window 8.1, and after attempting to install Adobe, Windows indicates that it already installed it. I looked at the installation date: It was installed in the year 2013. So I reinstalled Adobe and it hung on the step 2 of the installation process for a very, very long time. I quit. It still doesn't work! What should I do? Thanks! The tool has both a user interface as well as a command line interface. While most installs, uninstalls, updates, and repair operations happen without incident, there are cases where a user may not be able to complete such tasks due to some registry or file conflict on the machine. This is particularly problematic when permissions set on registry entries or files prevent the successful installation of new installs and/or updates. The Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool is designed to fix such issues by cleaning up corrupted installations, including removing or fixing corrupted files, removing or changing permissions registry entries, etc. The tool provides options for removing problematic Acrobat items only while leaving Reader untouched and vice versa. After running the tool, try downloading a nice, fresh copy of Adobe Reader and installing it on your system -- and please let us know how that works out for you. aubreymh 2015-07-15 21:33:21 UTC #4 I tried that, Straspey, but it didn't help. Chosen solution Adobe only offers some basic versions as a complete download. If there are newer version then you always need to run the updating in the Reader until you no longer get an update offered. For Adobe Reader that is 11.0.8 as you can see on the above posted other versions web page. http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/ If you have updated to the latest AR version that is available for your OS (XP SP3) then you are fine and can ignore the plugin check page about the AR plugin.
