I then formatted the drive via a windows machine into NTFS format, then rebooted in Ubuntu and went to copy everything back onto the drive. Before I did anything I did a recursive chmod to make sure it didn't run into any problems: Code: sudo chmod -R 777 * Then I went to copy it all back. Code: sudo cp * ~/Desktop/EXTERNAL And it copies for a bit, then I get a ******** of fail: Code: cp: cannot create directory `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/backup 3a': Input/output error cp: cannot create directory `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/batch3': Input/output error cp: cannot create directory `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/bcpc cars': Input/output error cp: cannot create directory `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/BJPrinter': Input/output error `~BLANK.ZIP' -> `/home/syndacate/Desktop/EXTERNAL/~BLANK.ZIP' cp: cannot create regular file `/home/syndacate/

If you're still not able to write to the directory, then it is possible that: the directory has the immutable flag enabled. check with lsattr. the directory is mounted with read-only permissions: type in terminal: cat /proc/mounts (or mount or cat /etc/mtab) and check the output, if directory is mounted read-only. If you are in the first case, change the directory attributes with chattr; If you're in the latter case, edit the file /etc/fstab. share|improve this answer edited May 7 '14 at 16:37 answered May 7 '14 at 11:03 girardengo 2,4541022 w
