You'll see a line that says: alias mongod="mongod --bind_ip=$IP --small --rest '$@'" Delete it then restart your workspace. Then you can do: mongod --bind_ip=$IP --nojournal and it will work as described in the official docs. Alternatively, you can follow these directions, but this is kind of a hack. If you look at the documentation (or run mongod --help) you will see that you need to provide the path to your db after the --dbpath command: --dbpath
