Turns out when the installer says "successful" but smpd is not running, then the install is silently incorrect. Commonly, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12984712/mpich2-unable-to-connect-in-windows-7 this is because: The service is not running. The service is not running on the port you contacted. The internal IP of the VNC Server has changed, invalidating the port-forward rule in the router. Resolution You should ensure that the service you are attempting to connect to is running correctly. To resolve this error https://support.realvnc.com/knowledgebase/article/View/309/1/failed-to-connect-the-connection-was-refused-by-the-host-computer it is then suggested to follow the steps in Timed out waiting for a response from the host computer, and How do I connect to another computer over the Internet? It only happens when the remote machine isnt logged on. If the machine has a user logged on VNC connects fine. I cant figure out why I can VNC to the login screen on some, and others it just dumps me out with that error and not display the login screen. Try logging onto that machine and trying to vnc again and I bet it works. If you find a solution im dying to know.
