I got the error message as above and carried out all of the suggested remedies (de-install all apple programs plus deep clean of all files on PC in a proscribed order, check the .NET requirements of my WIndows 7 OS).All to no avail - except that my PC lost half of of Windows functionality, took an AGE to boot up and I lost all connectivity to the outside world. I did install 4.8 I did the following to install gcc sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-f/test sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gcc-4.8 next I did sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/gcc gcc /usr/bin/gcc-4.6 60 --slave /usr/bin/g++ g++ /usr/bin/g++-4.6 sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/gcc gcc /usr/bin/gcc-4.8 40 --slave /usr/bin/g++ g++ /usr/bin/g++-4.8 sudo update-alternatives --config gcc the only thing I can think of is I don't have 4.8 when I type the command gcc -v it says gcc version 4.8.1 (Ubuntu 4.8.1-2ubuntu1~12.04) ok I run: ubuntu@ubuntu-VirtualBox:~$ sudo apt-get install g++ Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done g++ is already the newest version. g++ set to manually installed. The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required: thunderbird-globa
