Error Opening File For Reading Permission Denied Vboxheadless
3 years ago Last modified 19 months ago Virtualbox "Error opening file for reading: Permission denied" when run from command line Reported by: Brian B Owned by: Priority: minor Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.2.14 Keywords: proc auxv permission EACCES Cc: Guest type: all Host type: Linux Description When the virtualbox command is run from the command line I get the following error: Error opening file for reading: Permission denied Eventually I used strace to track this down: [pid 16866] open("/proc/self/auxv", O_RDONLY) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) Error opening file for reading: Permission denied Examining it, that file is owned by root but I'm running virtualbox as a non-privileged user. I'm guessing it gets created early and then virtualbox drops privileges before opening the file: # ls -l /proc/16866/auxv -r-------- 1 root root 0 Jul 8 16:55 /proc/16866/auxv Change History comment:1 Changed 19 months ago by _ This is silly. It complains but does not say what the file is. PLEASE either fix the message or remove it altogether. comment:2 Changed 19 months ago by frank To be able to fix this we would require instructions how to reproduce. comment:3 Changed 19 months ago by groovix I am seeing the same message: just run virtualbox as a normal user from the command line and you'll see the message: Error opening file for reading: Permission denied This is on Ubuntu 12.04. I haven't tried any other oses. ls -l /proc/self/auxv shows: -r-------- 1 myusername myusername 0 Mar 12 12:45 /proc/self/auxv and I cannot chmod that file as myusername or root (although the permissions indicate that I should be able to read it as is) comment:4 Changed 19 months ago by frank Sorry, I don't see the message. The /proc/self/auxv file is present here as well with the same permissions. There is no code in VirtualBox on Linux hosts which tries to access this file, check the source code yourself. And doing strace here I don't see any attempt to access this file either. So I guess that it's some library used by VirtualBox which does this access. comment:5 Changed 19 months ago by groovix When I made my comment I didn't realize /proc/self is a link specific to each process, so after finding the vir

Also affects distribution/package Nominate for series Bug Description I have just upgraded my Kubuntu system from 11.10 to 12.04, and then installed virtualbox. I have gotten far enough to install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack, so that I can use USB 2.0, and to add myself to the vboxusers group. I have not yet started installing Windows XP https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11944 inside my new virtualbox. I am seeing the following error on both version 4.1.12 (in the 12.04 release) and in the latest downloadable version from Oracle 4.1.16. Everytime I start up virtualbox, I get the error:
Error opening file for reading: Permission denied
Running strace on this process (well, seems I have to run it on the shell within which https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1014487 I start virtualbox) I can see the following:
15128 open("/proc/self/auxv", O_RDONLY) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) 15128 dup(2) = 19 15128 fcntl(19, F_GETFL) = 0x8002 (flags O_RDWR|O_LARGEFILE) 15128 fstat(19, {st_mode=

I used the command: Code: error opening file vboxmanage startvm Windows-XP It worked yesterday. However, it didn't show when I booted up today, so I went to start it manually. It said it was already open. According to the System Monitor, it was "headless", so I had to kill it from there. So, why does it do that? Backups are amazing. 99% of data loss can be prevented by spending less than $100 on an external drive. If you have seen an error, there is a good chance someone else has, too. Google is your friend. If this still doesn't work then you may also need to prepend a sleep command to make sure that your VM isn't starting before the window manager is fully loaded: Code: sleep 5 && VBoxManage startvm --type gui Windows-XP Cheesemill Adv Reply June 25th, 2012 #3 Ubun2to View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Tea Glorious Tea! extension pack Posted on April 9, 2012 by rwh These days, virtualisation is all the rage. The various competing virtualisation products have reached a level of maturity where they can be reliably used for server consolidation. VirtualBox is one of the easiest to use, most featureful programs available in this space and with the ability to run on many different OSes on hardware with or without VM extensions, it is also one of the most popular. However, there is one wrinkle when it comes to using it for server consolidation: the proprietary RDP/USB2 extension pack. The conventional wisdom when running a headless server with VirtualBox is that you need to install this proprietary extension pack from Oracle. This is fine until you want to use the server in production: as the PUEL only covers you for personal use and evaluation, you must purchase licenses. You can either pay £34 per user or £670 per "socket" (which has quite a convoluted definition). This gets you USB2 and RDP support. However, there is another way, at least when it comes to RDP support. Chapter 7 of the VirtualBox manual covers running virtual machines on a remote host, either with VBoxManage command (which offeres similar functionality to the VirtualBox GUI) or the VBoxHeadless command, which appears to be the backend binary that VBoxManage calls out to to do the actual work. Now, chapter 7 covers in detail how to connect to remote VMs using the proprietary extensions, but there's one feature that they conveniently failed to mention: the built-in VNC server. man VBoxHeadless VBOXHEADLESS(1) User Commands VBOXHEADLESS(1) NAME VBoxHeadless - x86 virtualization solution DESCRIPTION Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface (C) 2008-2011 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved.
