Error Opening Or Locking Inbox Ipop3d
logs just tell me that there was an error opening or locking the INBOX. I found out that the problem was fixed by deleting the user's INBOX in /var/spool/mail but I can't delete inboxes due to then we'll lose email. 1- Why does this happen? 2- How can I fix it? This is what I see in the logs port 110 service init from 66.247.6.122 May 8 15:43:36 us1 ipop3d[7302]: Error opening or locking INBOX user=xxxxx host=leg-66-247-88-88-RIA.sprinthome.com [66.247.88.88] May 8 15:43:36 us1 ipop3d[7302]: Logout user=marc host=leg-66-247-6-122-RIA.sprinthome.com [66.247.6.122] nmsgs=9 ndele=0 May 8 15:43:43 us1 ipop3d[7303]: port 110 service init from 198.92.338.833 thanks in advance! Junior Diaz Top Error opening or locking INBOX by Ernesto Pérez Estév » Fri, 10 May 2002 23:45:03 Not a sendmail problem. Try to update your ipop3d daemon. I bet you still using redhat 6.0 Also ask Marc Bautil to increase the timeout when retrieving messages.. that might help for the moment. > Hi, > I'm having some problems with my POP server, sometimes users can't download > their messages, the logs just tell me that there was an error opening or > locking the INBOX. As providers of email facilities to business, Toucan Internet LLP is called upon to offer additional support for the many mobile devices that hang on the end of our services. Most of these have their own little foibles that, if you're unaware of, can cost hours of lost time, raise your blood pressure to dangerous levels and leave you wondering why you ever upgraded in the first place. Don't worry you're not alone. Some clients have issues connecting the iPhone to POP3 accounts, http://www.verycomputer.com/4_c4f2aec3e8a65007_1.htm not because of the product itself, but rather the lack of configuration advice available to users. Having helped clients recently, this basic information may well be helpful to many. If you have another device such as a main PC that is also collecting your email, then there can be clashes as the POP3 protocol that handles your mail http://shebangme.blogspot.com/2011/12/error-opening-or-locking-inbox-user.html can only service one device at one time, therefore if one is connected and the other onepolls the mail box it will return an error as it cannot get access. These are typical log errors that show the issue and your sysadmin people will be able to spot this: May 19 12:54:35 toucan ipop3d[32387]: Login user=mrmail host=[212.183.140.122] nmsgs=10/10 May 19 12:58:56 toucan ipop3d[725]: Error opening or locking INBOX user=mrmail host=yourco.co.uk [83.104.167.229]Here we see the iPhone log in at 12:54:35 from IP address 212.183.140.122 and before that mail session has closed the office PC log has attempted a connection to the same account from 83.104.167.229. The office pc would report a connection error. To avoid this being a continual issue one solution would be to only have the office PC collecting when you are there. There are countless other ways email accounts can be configured that we'll not debate them all here, but rather flag up this iPhone/Mobile device and POP3 issue. Particularly with the iPhone and the above configuration with an office

Solved Linux Pop3 Problem Posted on 2005-02-09 Email Protocols Email Software 1 Verified Solution 12 Comments 803 Views Last Modified: 2013-11-29 I've got a problem with our email server. Everything was working fine until last week, then suddenly out of nowhere our users in remote offices (checking email through error opening the internet) couldn't download their email. It appears to only be a problem with downloading messages over about 800K. All users on the local LAN can check their email just fine(even overly large messages), but those checking from the internet have the problem. The server is redhat linux 8.0. When I check the logs on the server I get the message "no mailbox" and "Error opening or Locking INBOX" and if I look at the processes the error opening or ipop3d process is stuck open by the user that was trying to download their email. The remote users are using Microsoft Outlook and Outlook gives them the error "Some messages couldn't be retrieved from the server..." The user is able to download 1 or 2 messages if there is no attachments, but never the big messages. I've tried killing the process and deleting the lock file out of the /tmp directory, but when the user reconnects they get the same problem. I've tried changing settings in outlook and increasing the server timeout, but no luck with that. I've tried updating the imap package(which includes ipop3d) but that didn't work. I've tried updating the xinetd package(which controls pop3 services) but that didn't work. I've tried installing qpopper and disabling ipop3d but the problem is still there. I've even tried using pop3s over a secure ssl connection(I first had to enable it on the server) but that didn't work either. I don't know what else to try. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated my next option is to build a completely new server, but I don't want to do that quite yet. Registered: Mar 14, 2001Posts: 7248 Posted: Thu Jun 10, 2004 6:07 pm Please help.I have the most annoying problem.I have a mail server that begun to give this error, the users are driving me crazy. All of a sudden, a user can't access its mail, the login gets rejected, and I see this on the maillog file: Jun 10 18:22:15 myServer ipop3d[5827]: Can't open INBOX (file /var/spool/mail/userName): not in valid mailbox format "/var/spool/mail/userName" exists, and the perms are the same as all the other ones; when this happens it has a zero lenght. The only way of allowing the user to get its emails again it is by sending an email to that address.I'm running plain vanilla RH9, sendmail, ipop3 (via xinetd) and SpamAssassin (via a $HOME/.procmailrc file, and I'm not using it on all the accounts, only the ones that get SPAM, SA brings the server down).I thought that SpamAssassin was the culprit, but this problem happened with an account that does not uses SpamAssassin also. The server has some 40 accounts. The server has a 400 MHz proc (AMD-K6) & 160 MB of RAM, and runs as a mailserver and as a secondary DNS server. Some links I found regarding this, but none of them offering a soution really:A corrupted file, delete it, or edit it, and go on. The thing is, I don't have any file at all to edit.Redhat 9 pop3 error Not enough proc power on the mail server, it gets confused while trying to retrieve and delete mails. I would like a second opinion on this, before getting to work.Error opening or locking INBOX The most reasonable, but, I don't have a "user.lock" to delete...Any idea it is welcomed, I'm going crazy with this PITA, I'm afraid to loose e-mails. rcsheets Ars Praefectus Tribus: SF Bay Area, CA, USA Registered: Jan 13, 2001Posts: 4846 Posted: Thu Jun 10, 2004 6:12 pm Obviously this is not an elegant solution, b
