The good news is that you can pick these cards up for real cheap on Amazon or other online retailers. I wrote a review that explains these differences in detail, for a Transcend 4Gb SDHC card, here: http://www.epinions.com/review/Transcend... Source(s): http://

Ask Your Own Digital Cameras Question Customer: replied4 years ago. Hi Sorry, It is a Kodak Memory card 4GB SDHC.. http://www.justanswer.com/digital-cameras/679xz-power-shot-a530-stating-memory-card-error-already-replaced.html It started with the one that I had already used and downloaded from..So went out and bought a new one and still the same message. Yikes! Expert: RUSSTING replied4 years ago. OK, no problem.First, depending on how long you were using the original card, it is very likely that it became corrupted or fragmented to the point of being non-functional. The cards can fail over time. The second problem here is that the Canon Powershot A530 model camera is not compatable with SDHC (4gb and up) cards. While the camera was sold in 2006 it was made in 2005 and the file structure set up for SDHC cards were not standard until 2007. While the card may fit in the cameras SD slot the 4gb or larger cards will not operate correctly with this unit. You must use an SD card the is 2gb or less in this camera due to the design. You can still purchase 2gb cards at the link belowhttp://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Class-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-2048-A11/dp/B0009RGLSEWith a new 2gb or under card you will be able to tell if the problem is the camera or the card. If, and only if my answer to your question is helpful and you are Satisfied with it, please click the green Accept button and leave Positive Feedback. It http://www.camerahacker.com/Forums/DisplayComments.php?file=Storage/memory_card_locked started giving me a message of "Memory Card Error". This also seems to be a common problem with other types of Canon cameras, as viewed on the web. Canon support got right back to me via memory card email. They state that any SD card up to 2GB should work fine. I inserted the original 32MB card that came with the camera and the error message goes away! Various discussions on the web say spraying with electrical cleaner works, formatting card, etc. I dont know about these fixes. Yet when I then inserted a 512MB card into the camera, again it worked fine with no error message. Note: error messages saying "card is canon powershot a530 locked" should also be fixed when downsizing to 2 GB or less. I know this because this message was also on my camera screen and went away. Hope this helps. Remember, that not all SD cards are the same. There are:The original SD cards, which your SD550 supports, with a maximum size of 2 GB.SDHC cards which won't work in devices that don't explicitly support SDHC cards. They are from 4 GB-32 GB in capacity.SDXC cards of over 32 GB capacity. THey won't work in anything that doesn't explicitly support SDXC cards. If you can't get SDHC or SDXC cards to work in the SD550, it's not Canon's fault. Those formats didn't even exist when your camera was designed. on the side broke of is there anything i can do to unlock it manualy rob Tue, 4 Apr 2006 21:29:59 -0700 What kind of memory card is it, rob? Is it a SD card? Chieh Cheng Wed, 5 Apr 2006 00:34:18 -0700 take out the memory card look on the left hand side of it and it might say in little letters lock and theres a little thing that moves up and down and then move it up... i just had the same problem and felt really stupid hope it helps ellie Thu, 13 Apr 2006 20:55:41 -0700 Learned this from Wikipedia today: "The switch / notch works in same way as the notches on compact audio cassettes and videotape cassette tapes or floppy disks. A closed or covered notch is writable, while an open notch (or removed tab) is protected. If the switch becomes broken or falls off then the card will become a write-protected ROM card and no longer be writable. A possible troubleshooting solution would be to apply tape over the notched area (avoiding the connectors and the other notch) to configure the card in a permanent writable state." Chieh Cheng Mon, 1 May 2006 15:21:45 -0700 I lost the little tab when I took apart this miniSD adapter. I guess the old tape over write-protect trick from the old 5-1/4" floppy disk still prevails . . . ;-) Attached Image: Tape Over Notch on SD Card.jpg Chieh Cheng Tue, 27 Jun 2006 13:29:08 -0700 I had a similar issue when I inserted my card in a new card reader that was slightly misaligned from the factory. I broke off the lock. Managed to find the little gray plastic lock piece, though, and ended up prying apart the card, putting the lock back in its groove, and then crazy glueing (VERY CAREFULLY!) the card back together. It worked - at least, so far. Like the other person said, its just like a VHS tape, the reader 'sees' the write-protect in the proper position.
