Memory Card Error Canon Powershot Sd600
AM #1 benne30 Junior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Posts: 2 Looks like I've suffered from the same canon powershot s5 memory card problem as many of you. Took mybrand new S3 IS on holiday with a 2GB 50X Kingston card and took 320+ pictures and 10 video clips. All seemed OK. On the last day of https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/19655006 the holiday, I took a photo of my daughter and the camera said "unable to write file, memory card error". The card may have been full, I can't be sure, it was certainly nearly full. I then got a message "Memory card error" and so I switched off the camera. On switching it on again, the dreaded "No images" was displayed and the camera believed that I had http://forums.steves-digicams.com/canon/100823-memory-card-error-s3.html lost the lot. Because I work in IT, I was able to retrieve *most* of the photos when I returned home by trawling the card a sector at a time and rebuilding the JPGs, and it was clear what the problem was - the camera had made a mess of writing the FAT (file directory) and so the CANON folder had a subfolder of "CANON" which had a subfolder of "CANON" which had a subfolder of "CANON"... etc ie the photos were there, but the FAT was corrupt. I still have the card and may see whether Canon are interested in looking at it - but my personal suspicion is that the Canon firmware is less than reliable when using large cards, possibly especially when the card is full or nearly so. Anyone agree/disagree? Hi,First, what is the size (capacity in gb) and type (SD or SDHC) of the memory cards that you are trying to use? Ask Your Own Camera and Video Question Customer: replied5 years ago. i have tried a SD 2 gb card, a Sd 16 mb card memory card error and also a 8 Gb SD HC card. Expert: Russell A. replied5 years ago. Ok, no matter what you do, the 8gb SDHC card will not work in this camera. The file structure is too different. First, reset the camera to the default settings using the instructions below. The connections in the slot may be worn from age or even more likely covered with a thin coating of residue or dust blocking full contact. If you have not already done so, clean a single card (contact metal) with alcohol, leave it "lightly" wet and work it in and out of the slot, periodically wiping it when withdrawn. If available, you can also use canned compressed air to blow out the slot. If, and only if my answer to your question is helpful and you are Satisfied with it, please click the green Accept button and leave Positive Feedback. Ask Your Own Camera and Video Question Customer: replied5 years ago. I tried everything you said above and it did not work, Do you have any other suggestions? Expert: Russell A. replied5 years ago. Do you have a memory card reader for your computer?Do the 2gb and 16 mb cards show "locked" or do they also give you the "card error"? Ask Your Own Camera and Video Question Customer: replied5 years ago. They all say memory card error and on the bottom of the screen it says card locked. These cards do work in my other camera which is a canon powershot sd 1200 IS. thanks Expert: Russel

That's the lock so slide it to the other end of the slot. (it doesn't move very far). "A skill is developed through constant practice with a passion to improve, not bought."
