Camera TalkChange forum Does the speed of the SD/MMC card make much of a difference in W20? Started Dec 19, 2006 | Discussions Shop cameras & lenses ▾ Forum Threaded view calamity jane • New Member • Posts: 2 Does the speed of the SD/MMC card make much of a difference in W20? Dec 19, 2006 I was originally looking to find a deal for a 2GB SD card off of ebay, but the salesperson that sold me the W20 said that not all 2GB SD cards are equal and recommended that I buy this superfast card for $199 (i think it was a package deal that also included another battery). It still seems pretty pricey to me. I can't remember which SD card he was pushing, but I'm wondering if it makes that much of a difference? Thanks in advance for your advice! In reply to calamity jane • Dec 19, 2006 Addendum: Salesperson was promoting the "Professional HIGH SPEED (150x) 2GB Error Free Secure Digital (SD) Picture Card w/ Low Power Consumption" for $199 as opposed to regular SD cards that go for ~$80. Is it worth it? Reply Reply with quote Complain p750z • Forum Member • Posts: 81 Re: Does the speed of the SD/MMC card make much of a difference in W20? In reply to calamity jane • Dec 19, 2006 HiWhat you need to know is how many KB/sec a particular memory card can handle so as not have problems when shooting video or when you are in continuous mode. Usually a 1X card has a write speed of 150 kB/s. So a 80x card can write 12000KB/sec (roughly 12 MB/sec), whereas a 150x card can write 22500 KB/sec (roughly 22,5 MB sec).According to Steves-digicams review of the W10 (but I think W10 and W20 are more or less the same), the W10 needs 10,324,986 byte (11MB) to write 10 secs of video 640x480, 30fps. Hence the video system of W10 (and W20 because the use the same compression algorithm for movies) needs roughly 1,1 MB sec to write to the card. Conclusion: Even a 10X memory card would be enough. If I were you I would buy 2 1GB SD cards with a speed let's say 60-80x because they have the best perfomance/price ratio and you reduce the possibility of a hardware failure (flash memories do have their problems and can't be error free)For a good discussion see: http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/compact_flash_memory_cards.htmlcalamity jane wrote:Addendum: Salesperson was promoting the "Profess
