Granted i'm not using linux as much as I used to (not after

windows 7). I have archlinux running on my HTPC. Never had any issues before that was this severe, unless I end_request i/o error dev fd0 sector 0 vmware upgraded and forgot to read news section. Booted the htpc today to be greeted by "Buffer I/O error on device sdd1, logical block" with a massive wall of text, a few seconds later http://theisozone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=37356 "welcome to emergency mode."*This is NOT hdd where the linux kernel is residing on. What logical purpose would it serve for the kernel/userspace to abort everything just because fsck fails or something? If this was indeed my linux partition I would fully understand.Anyways, I used parted magic, ran fsck, smart. Sure enough fsck warned me about bad/missing superblock. Restored the superblock by using e2fsck. I https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=171667 had over 10 000 "incorrect size" chunks. Ran 2-3 SMART after that. fsck says okay, smart gives a 100% status report with no errors.Oh yeah, I have turned off FSCK completly in my fstab, thinking about at least turning it on my bigger hdds Questions:*Is SMART reliable? If it says it's alright, does that mean i'm safe? Would physical broken sectors turn up by SMART?*I know SMART warns the user in windows 7 if hdd failure is imment. Is this possible within linux as well? Since i'm NOT using a GUI, is this possible to send through a terminal/email?*Sometimes the HTPC have been forefully shut down (power breakage), could this be one of the causes of the I/O error? As always, thank you for your support. I've used mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda1 after the fdisk command, but mkfs doesn't work! And when I press Ctrl+Alt+F6 I see this message: Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 4684514 Have I lost my hard buffer i o drive? If not, what should I do? hard-drive format share|improve this question edited Jan 29 '13 at 6:57 Eliah Kagan 55.9k15162255 asked Jan 29 '13 at 6:29 Marcel Soubkovsky Clemente 1613 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote The error message may point to a hardware error. Please run: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 bs=1048576 This command should abort after writing as many mebibytes as your partition is large. If it aborts before with an error, or if dmesg shows hard disc I/O errors, your HDD is bad, and you ought to move the data off it and trash the bad disc ASAP. Warning! The above command deletes all data currently written to your /dev/sda1 partition! share|improve this answer answered Mar 1 '14 at 23:17 mirabilos 332214 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. When I try to clone with Chimp as usual i'm getting a "Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 568448" error message. I've tried searching the forums and elswhere for a solution. Any idea's what up? or what that means? Ashevent, May 22, 2016 #1 ASSEMbler Administrator Joined: Mar 13, 2004 Messages: 19,393 Likes Received: 672 Found this on another forum about Buffer i/o error " I used a laptop with Windows XP SP3, an IDE to USB attachment and XBoxhdm. I "hotswapped" using the error 12 method. QEmu 0.12.2 works well. I downloaded the -Lite windows binary from QEmu on Windows. And I ran QEmu with these parameters Code: qemu.exe -L . -m 512 -hda //./PhysicalDrive2 -cdrom linux.iso -boot d -localtime -M pc -parallel none The biggest difference is -parallel none and no sound. This is because I received IRQ errors. My laptop doesn't have a parallel port and I suppose the default is to attach one. I also removed the sound because of the IRQ errors. After the IRQ errors I changed the physical drive. ./PhysicalDrive2 is because I kept another USB drive attached to my computer. It was trial and error (either 1 or 2) to find the correct one. I knew 2 was correct because xbrowser worked and the intro for linux displayed the device with the correct size. Again, thanks for the great tip. You saved me a headache to find a computer with an IDE... Again. Will" ASSEMbler, May 22, 2016 #2 Ashevent likes this.
