Replace the drive or do the following... Back up everything of value via Target Disk Mode (if possible) then boot your MacBook from a USB or DVD installer. Run Disk Utility, selecting the secure erase/zero fill option and wipe your drive. This will issue an ATA secure erase command that will fill every allocation block with a zero, automatically mapping out any bad blocks/sectors that will be causing your I/O problem. This is the modern equivalent of the old low-level format, and while there is some debate on the subject I use this method regularly and it works well - assuming the drive isn't riddled with bad blocks. All FSCK does is check the file structure, it doesn't scan the drive surface to determine if the drive ha

This morning it would not get past the Apple screen. I tried opening https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/need-help-pls-startup-problem-disk0s2-i-o-error-503310/ in Terminal and got disk0s2 I/O error with a long string of whatever words behind it. I tried fsck -f and it got to "rebuilding b-tree catalog" (b-catalog tree?). After that, there was a o error long column of "invalid node structure" mixed with "invalid record count" and some "disk0s2: I/o error invalid key length"... to (4, 1168).I tried starting from the install disk, 10.6.4, holding down the C key. Only got the Apple screen with spinning thing. Tried the Apple Hardware Test, twice, because it didn't seem right. But the test got about 90% done and stopped, I left it for 30 minutes disk0s2 i/o error and nothing happened.Does this mean my HD is dead? If so, is it possible to replace it in this old of a machine, 2010? What would be a reasonable choice of new HD, would a solid state one work?I do have data backup as of yesterday. I did disconnect it before trying to restart the computer.I had added memory a couple of months ago and the computer was working fine until yesterday. Is there anything else I should try before giving up on the computer starting? I do not want to drag the computer to an Apple Store. Logged RevX Ringo Bingo Posts: 12008 Gender: "O for a horse with wings!" If you can bring up disk utility from the install disk you can check to see if the Smart status is showing valid or not. If it shows bad then yes it is time for a new disk. Depending on the type of mac it can be easy or difficult to replace the internal disk but not impossible to do at home.If you can't get the machine to boot at al
