I just upgraded to 8.10 using the Synaptic Package Manager. I'm getting the following error when I boot with a disk in the CD/DVD drive. end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 216176 Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 54044 The following is an excerpt from kern.log: Nov 2 07:15:00 Melchior kernel: [ 27.942989] sr 4:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Medium Error [current] Nov 2 07:15:00 Melchior kernel: [ 27.942991] sr 4:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. The error message stops when I eject the CD. I do not get the error message at all when I boot with an empty CD/DVD drive. However, the drive works after Ubuntu is loaded. I can read CDs and DVDs just fine. I did not see this error in 8.04. a) Is anyone else having this issue? b) How can I resolve this issue? Sy

Arch Linux » Error: "end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector xxxxx" - Linux Error: end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 537392 If you're getting a similar error filling your screen once you've installed Ubuntu, don't panic. It's pretty common http://alexsleat.co.uk/2011/03/20/end_request-io-error-dev-sr0-sector-xxxxx-linux/ which is basically because Ubuntu (or any other Linux distro) can't control your CD/DVD drive properly, it's probably trying to open/close it but doesn't know if it has or not. The problem is that you don't get to see what Ubuntu wrote before because it's filled your screen up with this error. If you've just installed Ubuntu this probably happened when it wanted you to take the disc out o error and close the cd tray (if there is one) then hit Enter to finish the installation, so just do that and ignore this error.
